Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | How do you guys wash your interior boat carpet ? My carpet is in pretty good shape but is all flat from at the casting over the years . Is there any tricks to perk it up a bit ? Powerwashing , steaming ??

Location: Black Creek, WI | I rarely wash it... except for fishing in the rain or wiping up a stain or two with a wet rag.
What I've found works well for "perking up" matted down carpet is to use a larger shop vac (5 HP+) and a fine nozzle attachement. If you scrape the nozzle against the grain of the carpet it lifts it up real nice. Do this on a regular basis and you should be happy with the results.
Now... if someone could help me figure out how to clean up 1 gallon of licorice smelling fish scent that is NOT water soluable... I'd be forever grateful.  |

Location: Indiana | I would guess Dawn dishwashing stuff would work for the fish scent if it's not water soluable. Of course, it might take a LOT of it for a gallon of that stuff. HA! But do that first...oh yea, then lots of Febreeze. |

| I don't know if it'll take care of the stink, but in terms of stain remover on marine carpeting, I've found nothing more effective than a spray cleaner called "spot shot" -- this stuff is amazing. It lifted a black grease stain that has been on my carpet for 10 years! I've found nothing that this stuff won't eliminate! |

Location: Brookfield, WI | See if you can find a "Super Sucker" vacuum cleaner with the nap nipper attachment. Should perk up your boat carpet nicely. Known as the "Homemaker's Little Helper", the nap nipper will also perk up your wife. She'll love you for it.

| exactly what Norm said...spray wash at the do it yourself car wash...I finally figured that out last year...wish I had known how well it works years ago!

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Any of you have issues with slick conditions say a day or two after using dawn or other "general" type soaps? I would think you'd need to be dilligent in thoroughly rinsing your carpets. Maybe a lo-sudsing soap in stead??? The last thing I want is a slick deck while hopping aroung while fishing/boating.

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | This weekend I washed the boat and took the advice of the power washer with general cleaner drawn in for suds. Here's what I did:
1. With a stiff bristled scrub brush brushed against the grain of carpet to draw it up
2. Vacuumed carpet.
3. Power washed carpet with suds.
4. Power washed carpet w/o suds (rinsed).
5. Shop-vacuumed carpet again.
This is an clean as the carpet has been since I bought the boat new 4 years ago. The amount of dirt in the water was pretty amazing. The nap is up, but it will never get back to new again. I'm guessing in about 10 years I will purchase new carpeting--The rear part of the boat has a stitched edging all they way around the floor. I'm thinking could order new from Ranger and reinstall myself---the deck and compartment covers in the rear I'm guessing will have to be professionally installed. Anyhow it looks great now after my marathon cleaning session. |

| I never use soap, power washer with hot water, power was the whole boat angle it back so the water drains, scrub it with a brush, power was again, shop vac the whole bottom to remove dirt and water. Looks like new, using soap leaves a residue attracting dirt faster |

| Oh yeah, it's true that rsidual soap attracts dirt. It has gummy tendancies that will cause dirt to stick to it worse than if you had left things alone to begin with.
Two things I'd add on washing your boat at the car wash:
1) Make sure that you rinse it THOROUGHLY. The car wash soap is very concentrated, and will leave risidual soap in your carpet which feels grungy or filmy from that day on until you get it out. And will get dirty again faster.
2) You're going to have a lot of water in your hull afterwards that probably won't come out with the bildge pump alone if the boat is still on the trailor. I ususally end up jacking the front of the boat up high enough to make it all drain to the back so that it can then either be drained or pumped out. |
