Subject: Engine not running right

Hi,

My 50 horse 4 stroke Mercury starts to cut out at top speed. It runs fine until the throttle is all the way down. I am not sure what would cause this, any help would be appreciated before I spend the money on taking it to the shop.

Thanks

sounds like either ist starving for fuel , check your primer bulb and if its bad replace with a mercury bulb.. not those cheap junk you get at wally world.. that cost me big time.. and check the fuel filter/water seperator . just another little thing but when was the last time you changed the water impellar. sometimes when they go bad the engin will run good at idle butr not at wide open. causing the engin to get hot and not fire right....bill

thank you archerynut36. I got a good stream of water coming from the engine. I replaced the primer bulb. The fuel filter is ok. I think maybe I'll have to take it in. bummer!

Sounds like a fuel pump issue. Had some of the same symptoms with a 4-stroke 90hp Suzuki a few years back, bad low pressure fuel pump.

Chances are you have a plugged fuel injector or a gummed up carb, that's why its starving for fuel....the motor is looking for maximum fuel flow and isn't getting it. Do you have a 10 micron filter installed? I had this problem with a yammy 4 stroke. I had the filters and injectors cleaned which had crap in them from junk in the fuel. Now I have no problems and change the 10 micron once a year. Another thing to check is the high pressure fuel pump, the yamaha's have a high pressure and a low pressure pump. Check to see if you merc has the same. Your high pressure pump could be acting up if you have one.

Fuel, one issue or another. On my 40 Merc 4 stroke, it was a fuel pump.
