Posts: 81 Location: Indiana | My new boat has a E-tec 150 and I was wondering what are the differances between the 50 and 100 oils? I know the dealer has to program the engine for the 100. Do you really use less oil to offset some of the price or is it more of an extreme performance issue. Any help is appreciated.

No the dealer does not have to program the boat to use xd100. i don't know if that option is still available. xd100 is a synthetic oil and helps keep your engine cleaner with less carbon build up. it is more expensive but in the long run it is better for your engine.

Posts: 181 Location: Valparaiso, Indiana | You can use the xd100 without reprogramming the EMM....The xd100 is full syntheic, with the reprogramming you do use less oil and it burns cleaner with less smoke, the xd50 is a syntheic blend and xd30 is oil. With EMM in its current programming mode you can burn all xd oils... But, if you do reprogram the EMM for the xd100 its the only oil that you can use for the motor. Hope this helps. Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | My 2008 200 E-TEC is from the same family as your 150 and I had it programmed for XD100 only. If the motor is designed to use it, XD100 is cleaner burning being fully synthetic, and you use less of it, why not use it? The higher performance you run at for extended periods of time, the higher the oil ratio they recommend, as in don't run at the XD100 setting if you are racing or pulling heavy commercial type loads. But for my recreational use, I see no reason not to use it. According to the literature, the motor automatically runs more oil for the required number of break in hours at the minimum RPMs needed before it goes to the lesser oil usage mode. No problems last year and I'm not expecting any this year either. It used a lot less than my old carbed FastStrike 150, and that was an oil sipper compared to others on the market of comparable vintage. The only draw back with programming it to use the XD100 is you then must use it, so take enough along if you are unsure of the supply on extended vacations. I haven't run it for a two week Canadian vacation yet, but doubt whether it will use more than a gallon and a half compared to my old 150 that used about 2 1/4 gallons for our typical two week trip. Price wise it's going to be close to a wash from what I see, probably a slight advantage to the E-TEC even using the much more expensive oil. Noticed it was almost $9 a gallon cheaper if I bought it in bulk so maybe the E-TEC will be quite a bit cheaper when the final figures are in! http://forums.etecownersgroup.com/mb/barnaclebill Try this site for a lot of information by people a better qualified than I am to answer your question.
