I did try to do a search to see if this topic has been discussed before. But I always get an error using the search function here. That being said

What camera do you use in your boat? I am currently in the market for a new camera. I am leaning towards a DSLR vs a point and shoot.  Just weighing the pros and cons. Any thoughts or advise? Thanks

Canon Powershot SD 870 IS

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcate...

The only complaint I have about it is that you can't see the display when you're wearing polarized glasses. That might be the case with any LCD screen, though. Things I like:

It's nice and compact
It's simple to use (lots of complicated settings, but once you figure out how to set it up it's pretty easy)?

Things I don't like:
- No viewfinder (the big display makes up for that, though)
- 3.8x optical zoom -- not enough sometimes. (I haven't played with the digital zoom much, figure you can zoom in and edit on the computer anyway)
- you can only imprint the date on certain resolution settings

For the price range, I think its a great camera. If I was taking a lot of scenery photos, long distance shots, etc. I'd consider the Nikon D50 or D40, but those are a little cumbersome to carry around. I like a camera you can fit in your pocket.

Pentax W60, waterproof, 10 megapixel, takes great pics, small/compact, great battery life in cold weather.

My vote goes for Canon. I had a Powershot 560 that took some wonderful photos for me over the last 3 years, and I only had one complaint, the optical zoom. Well, I dropped that camera in the lake last month, and it is no more. I called Canon to see my options since I didn't have the money to go out and replace it. Come to find out they have an upgrade program to refurbished units. I had 3 options, and took the best one for the money. Now I have a Canon SX100 IS, 10X Optical zoom, and I can't wait to take some musky shots of it this summer. Beautiful camera, and the company customer service was top notch. There might be better camera options for you out there, and I don't have any experiance with customer service from other camera companies, but I ended up getting 2 great cameras from Canon, and didn't get any hassle from them even with an out of warrenty problem, and it wasn't even a manuf. defect in the camera.
For what it's worth, the Canon was not waterproof, but did not die from being dropped in the water. I was unable to get it back together, hence my call to them. The camera still functioned fine, but was in 2 pieces, and wan't really "usable".

Kodak M753

It's affordable. It does the job. No complaints after 2 years.

I dropped my Pentax Optio 10 in the river too! I wonder if they have a program like Canon does? I really liked it before the swim it took. If I were buying a camera, I would look for one that offers a photo printer with it. Its nice to come home from fishing and have beautiful pictures in less then 5 minutes! Alot of companies are doing this now!

Looks like everyone is in favor of point and shoot. Being waterproof is a nice option, being small might be the way to go. I want to take this camera to Mexico next week and where ever else I may end up. I am really interested in GREAT photo quality. Canon sounds like they have good customer service. I'll see what they have available for a higher end waterproof point and shoot. Great feedback!!

Nikon Cool Pix, cheap, great pictures and if it does fall overboard no biggie. cannon has some great cameras, but for a point and shoot your paying for the name.

Nikon D40, Nikkor 18-200VR glass.

Nikon D70, 18 to 70 DX or 18-55 DX glass.

My next camera will be a Nikon D90 because of the stellar video it shoots through a VR lens.

I shoot literally thousands of fish pictures a year, and really like the feel, speed, and quality I get from the D40. Great camera for a good price, add a $750 VR lens, and you have an image machine.

This was from a Frabill photo shoot this week on LOTW out of Rocky Point. Driving snow, nasty wind, and a great time!

Yep thats the image quality I am looking for since I want to use it everywhere. I think I will get a mid range point and shoot like the Pentax W60 and see if I can save some money on a gently used DSLR. Not a big fan of used electronics since you never know what you are getting.I'm going to look into that D70 some more. Mind if I PM you sometime with a few questions about the DSLR Steve? Thanks again everyone. All helpful advice.

Sure, any time. I shoot a D70, a D50, and a D40 would love to help. My next camera will be a D90.

I would recomend a DSLR for most people. The other advantage of a DSLR is the quantity of photos you can take without "waiting" for the camera to catch up like point and shoots. IMO - low end DSLR's are better than high end point and shoot.

More care is required for a DSLR but it is worth it. Canon vs. Nikon, etc.... is the same as Chevy vs. Ford. Some people really like "their" brand but they are all good cameras from what I have seen. Get a good waterproof camera case for the boat and you are set.

I got the Canon G10 this winter.

Amazing photos, TONS of options.

Highly recommend this camera. It is VERY well built, very strong with lots of actual metal parts not plastic.

I would definately check one out in your in the market for a new camera.
