Subject: inexpensive custom boat cover - how?

Hello. I have a few questions regarding a canvas cover for my runabout boat.

The problem:
I am currently using a canvas cover for my boat that I bought at Wal-Mart. The problem is it doesn’t fit perfectly. I tie it down pretty tight using elastic straps with metal hook ends. But I still have the wind kick up parts of the cover and knock against the boat (wearing the paint off).

What I need is something that is easy and fast to put on. I would be interested in doing it myself if it saves money (is their snap kits? Can you recommend a brand and where I can buy this from). I want something strong and that will last me. Waterproof is a must of course.

Other considerations:

1. If I get a customer cover I only need the cover to go from the windshield on back.

2. The boat is very old. So I don’t think they would even sell a cover that fits perfectly. That’s why I am considering the custom option. Is there any pros and cons for button down covers (is using straps a better option)?

3. Can you give me specifc manufactures and where can I buy these products?

Your advice, help is appreciated.

Nathan Wright

Go to the local phone listings and look up canvas/custom in the yellow pages, also check the Boat Accessories section there. Each canvas shop has it's own specialty, so a few phone calls may be in order.[]

Steve, I am looking for advice. I don't have millions of dollars like you do :) (jk). So I have to find other ways to get by. The yellow pages cannot give me great advice like the muskie message boards can, but thank you for the suggestion.

Anyone else have ideas?

I'll take a shot in the dark here...

If you go to Boat-US in bloomington off of Lyndale avenue and 86th street, they have snap kits, bulk snaps and such to at least do the snap cover.

Depending on how heavy of fabric, and the type of fabric you are looking to get might be a bit of a headache. I would maybe place a call to a couple of custom shops to see if they sell bulk material. Heck..you may even want to call a fabric store even. Minnesota fabric, Joanne Fabric, etc. You might even want to take a walk through Menards to see if they have canvas tarps that you could cut and sew to what you need.

Wouldn't think it would get too expensive, but maybe a little time consuming.

Or, you can do as I suggested, and call the local canvas shops to see if they will provide you with material. They have it, and can do about anything you can ask for from a very expensive custom fit job to a batch of material you can do yourself if you have a sewing machine.

I have seen custom covers from $100 in tyvek which is waterproof and tough to $600 in marine grade canvas.[]

And by the way Nathan, I was trying to help you find a canvas source, and wasn't being a 'smart alek'. I get the same question many times a month at my job, as Tuffy doesn't offer covers.

Ok, Thanks Steve. I always look for the best solution at the best price.

I don't use the yellow pages anymore. Just the Internet. A fantastic way to find out info fast.

A smily face like this :) means I am joking with ya.

Dude, use Saran Wrap!!! It's cheap, easy to put on/take off plus it is clear, allowing you to see the inside of your boat + how it's getting along...lose that cooler???? Saran Wrap covers also keep your lunch fresh, dry + tasty; fill the boat w/ sandwiches for the weekend! Sorry...could not resist.....

Sponge, do the have saran wrap rolls that are 72 inches wide?

I like the idea of seeing into my boat. Maybe I could cut a holde in the bottom and wrap that with saran wrap as well.

Hell, I can save a lot by using saran wrap waders.

The rolls may be found in industrial size in various food outlets. I suggest glassing in the clear lid from a chafing dish though if you cut a hole in the bottom....[;)]

I was going to extend a 5 gallon pail bucket from the boat bottom, then add the saran wrap at the bottom of the bucket. I can then insert my head so I can get a closer view of the lake bottom. Although I see rock piles as a potential problem when driving the boat over and my head is in the bucket. Any suggestions?

Home Depot manufactures the "Inverted Paint Pail" in 1,3, + 5 gallon sizes that will fit any boat bottom + also features the "police peeking plexiglass mirror"...you can see the fish but they can't see you....the deluxe model comes w/ a side finder + a.m. radio![:sun:]

Correct Mike! and it also comes w/ a periscope for above water viewing while your head is stuck in the bucket; soon to be added are NVGs(night vision goggles) for new moon periods....[:0]

Check out this site....
http://www.coversearch.com/cgi-bin/coversearch.cgi

There is a drop down menu in the middle of the page, and they have most makes and models of boats there. Their prices must have gone up this year. I bought a cover for my Tuffy last year for $134, and now they want $178.

It is still less than a custom made cover from a local shop, and they fit very well.

I spoke with a Saran Wrap Represenative today. She explained they were working on an all Saran Wrap boat. Apparently see through boats that allow your sandwiches to stay fresh are in high demand by your typical fisherman. She asked if I was interested in their pre cut fish storage bags, where the size of the fish has it's own customized bag that fits perfectly around the fish. I explained to her that I wasn't interested because I catch and release. She then offered a tank top that I could put on a Muskie when I catch it to keep it warm thus entice it to bite more often when the water was cold....I told her I would have to think about that.
