Subject: modify jackpot to weagle?

I have been fishing jackpot's for pike now for a couple of seasons. But as everybody knows they get pushed out of the water to much in my opinion. How great and exciting the fishing mightbe, I just miss to much fish on it. So I ordered some weagles at muskyshop. Since they were out of 8" I took the 10". When they arived I was shocked to see the size of them. I didn't expect them to be so big! Since I live in Europe, ordering another couple of weagles will take a while. So I thought why not put extra weight on a giant jackpot so it will not be blown out so easy. Anyone experience with putting extra weight on jackpots? any tips?

(Sorry if my english is a bit poor)

It's not about the price. It's just that those baits aren't in any shops over here. Also the satisfier isn't for sale here.

The Satisfier is not the same as a weagle! It doesn't throw as much water ! I'm not trying to knock the satisfier. ( I use both) I'm just saying its not the same! There was a post on here a while back saying to move the front hooks up toward the nose of a Jackpot about 3/4 of an inch to increase hooking percentage. I'm going to try it myself this year! Good luck and hope this helps you!

You can certainly do some things to a Jackpot to increase its hooking ability, but you will never turn it into a Weagle. The baits are very different in what they are designed to do.

Not sure why Rollie and Helens would be out of the 8 inchers, but there are a few places that I know have them in stock right now...Musky Tackle Online, Big Wood Musky Lures, and Thorne Brothers. Any one of them should be able to get a bait out to you quickly.

Yes, Don't let the size of that Weagle bother you, big pike will eat it!

Pike will be all over that 10" Weagle , as will large Bass and big Zander (Walleye in the USA.)

A Jackpot can't even carry a Weagle's jock........ IMHO.

I am a huge Weagle fan! I can't say enough good things about them. But....There is a time and a place for a Jackpot too, and it can be very, very productive in the right situation!

Mark,
Have you tried the 7" Baby Doc made by Musky Mania Tackle? It is heavier than the Jackpot and has good action. Casts a long way.

I'll second the try the 10" Weagle, although there are modifications to the Jackpot that will help it. Take out the front hook hanger and move it about 1/2 inch forward. This will give it a more level action and keep it in the water a little better. You may have to experiment with hooks to get the sound that you want, but your hook-up % should increase.

Phil Gutmann has some nice modifications you can do to Jackpots to make them more effective. Check out the articles on his website and I think it's www.muskie62.com or something close to that. A Jackpot will not be the same as a Weagle but if you like them and the size there are things you can do to make them better. Other really nice walk the dog baits worth checking out are the Musky Safari Water Moccassin, the BS Wily One Eyed Wily, and the H20 bait which I can't remember the name of right now. All very good effective baits.

Thanx for all your advice. For small topwaters I use the small size salmo maas marauder with great succes!

And reading all your positive reactions I'll give the 10" weagle a fair chance. Hopefully it performs right with my st. croix pm76mhf.

I looked at the modifications by Phil Gutmann. But he ads weight to the rear. I thought adding weight to the front woud make it stay in the water better. Anyone tried adding extra weight in front of the front treble? I think that should do the same as moving the front treble forward.

I bought a Water Moccosin at the Milwaukee show. I'm excited to use it as well. From what I hear its supposed to be as good if not better than the Weagle.

i'm sure that's a good bait, big w-t-d topwaters definitely catch fish.
as for the rest? why do you suppose that every bait gets compared to the Weagle?

get yourself the real deal. fish happy.
here's a couple samples...

This could help out the jackpot to get better hookups.
