Posts: 373 Location: On the River | I have several 7000's I would like to use for trolling rather than buy line counter reels Has anyone used the line counters that attach to the rod such as the one Rapala has out . If so how well did they work for you Thanks Dan

Posts: 1270 | I've used the Shakespeare one's that clip on the rod and they work OK but after a while they seemed kind of a PITA. If I"m using a 7000 that isn't a line counter I just count passes. one pass equals 18'.

It helps that we have enough experience to know what length line to run with the different types of lures we use but what we do is attach the counters and run a certain amount of line out and then use a colored sharpies and mark the line right at the reel. For example take 3 different colors and mark 30', 40', and 50' or what ever lengths you will generally be using. You can use the length of your rod to adjust the in between lengths. If you want to set a 10" Jake at 54' and you're using an 8' rod; just run the 50' color marker to the middle of your rod. Not an exact science but much faster for resetting lines. Posts: 108 Location: Toronto, ON | Dan....sell a couple of 7000's and buy a Penn 320GT2LC....you won't regret it and you'll have a trolling reel that beats the 7000 any day.

Posts: 1270 | Except for the fact that the 320GTLC's aren't out yet! They should be out by spring though. I've used them already and the Penn is a great reel but I will still take the 7000 over the 320 just about any day. If you like the 7000 and want a linecounter on it you can also buy a 7000LC or a 7000LC Synchro.
