Last fall I broke my Dawg rod (FigRig) and have had no success getting it replaced. Looks like my lifetime replacement rod is anything but.

I need to get a new one at least 8' or longer. Whats your favorite rod for tossing mags/pounders and why?

i use the LGM 90H Lamiglas. this rod was designed by my friend rick meverden to troll and cast heavy baits like the bull dawgs and H20's hard head.

good luck

I know there was a long thread about this just recently. I'll second Franks Customs. Frank is a very nice guy & does excellent work. Another great builder is Dadson's, Scott & Sean B. also do great work and are good people! As far as the blank, I would look into a Calstar for what your looking for. The reason.... Tip action for throwing, & for give while fighting a fish. Plenty of backbone for power. The rod is little heavier (physical weight) then the Croix, but is a real work horse for big rubber.

Now I am not going to say that there is only one rod for the job however my boat saw almost 100 fish last year on dawgs alone and everyone was caught on a Musky Innovations Rod. Now you can say that because I am sponsored by them that I am biased but believe me I used to throw everything out there and there is nothing that can live up to these rods. First you need an extremely heavy rod to throw these and most importantly get hook sets, a lot of rubber to move through a fish’s mouth. Now one of the things I love about these rods is that they have an extremely solid backbone and yet maintain a slightly flexible tip which can really help keeping fish hooked by giving the angler a lot more forgiveness. The last two things is that they have a long rod but which allows the angler to throw the baits easier along with making them easier to hold and they also employ 11 fuji guides which makes casting that much easier. I realize that the rods above are good also but I thought I would place my vote.

Which rod model rod do you use for throwing mag dawgs and pounders?

One of the things I love about these rods is that they offer all the rods in every length and weight. Bottom line is that I don’t want to conform to what St. Croix things I should use as a jerk bait rod. Sam the super Mag is a great rod. The question is what are you trying to do with it? Personally I love the Mag dawg sticks for throwing Mags and the Monster mag rod for throwing pounders. Now I know I am getting technical but when you fish everyday you pick up on this mostly useless stuff, when I am ripping mags I like the super mag just for a little more backbone. I also use the Super Mags for big walk the dawg topwaters and large jerkbaits. Peter I don’t know what your budget is but if it was a perfect world you would have a Mag Dawg stick for throwing mags and a Monster Mag stick for throwing pounders. Now if your looking for one rod to throw both I would definitely air on the heavy end and get the Monster Mag. The bottom line is that the reason people struggle to hook up on these big plastics is that there tackle is to light. Personally I don’t just use a stiff rod but I also take pliers and totally lock down my drag. The more pressure I can get to that fish the better chance he will end up posing for the camera.

Spencer,

Have you had any issues breaking any rods? I have heard of many people breaking MI rods last summer.

The short answer is no. I searched the forums, and don't see any complaints so I'd guess the MI rods are just fine. Spencer is on the road, when he returns later tonight he'll post his perspective.

There is no rod like the Monster Mag! I don't care what anybody says! I have been using these rods for two years and nothing out there comes close to the Monster with a powerful reel! An 8'6" Monster will cast a pounder like butter. Whoever is saying that the MI rods are breaking from defect does not know what they are talking about. These are the strongest rods I have used. Especially the Monster! They have a small percentage of fiberglass built into them giving them the strength. I actually bought 8 Monsters in the 8'6" lenght last year for myself and clients use because I heard the company was nearly sold out of that model for the rest of the year. I am also a huge fan of the 9 foot rods by MI... Awsome for casting all these big double blades and figure 8's without bending over... hahaha. I own something like 27 of these rods in nearly all sizes and have only broken one 9 footer because window of my truck topper slammed down on the tip while I was loading my truck.
Trust me on these babies and sounds like this Spence fella knows what I'm talking about... Eventhough I heard he looks like Opbee Taylor and can't catch any fish!! hahaha

Steve thanks for holding down the fort for me. No I personally have not broken a single MI rod to date. They have been flying in my boat for two years now and have resulted in more then 350 muskies durring that time. Now for those who have not fished with me before, I not only put alot of time on my equiptment but I also throw as many monster lures as anyone out there. So in a nut shell I am a rods worst nightmare. Now I am sure if you talk to enough people you will find a few that have broken them before however that can be said for any rod. Bottom line is, when you apply these types of extreme pressures to any rod they will break. In my opinion they break as little, if not less, then any other rod out there.

I forgot to mention that I heard MI now has a new 10 foot rod and extending models... like 9 footers that will break down to fit in an 8' rod locker! Not sure if these rods are out yet but I heard Rollies will have exclusive rights to their sales for the first couple months. Spence what do you know about these rods? Or have I just been hearing roomers? But if Rollies is going to take exclusive rights they must be cool.

Nice posts, I will consider MI Rods now for when I make my next rod purchase. What model works best with DC10 Bucktails?

I do not know from experience. However, I've asked around on the forums and I've decided on the 8'6" swimbait/jerkbait rod. It has a rating of 2-10 oz. I plan on using this rod for DC-10s and the regular 9" dawgs.

I would agree with Madman about the Magnum model being the best choice for 10's.

i'm a bit confused...is the "magnum" that you gentlemen are referring to the "swimbait/jerkbait" 2-10 oz model on the rollie & helens site or the "supermag" 3-12 oz version?

Magnum is 2-10 (Swimbait/Jerkbait)
Super Magnum is 4-16......Rollie's is wrong as I own an 8'6" super mag and it says 4-16 on the rod (Designed for pounders)

I agree that the swimbait jerkbait rod 8'6" is great for double tens.

Yep, the Supermag is labelled wrong. I think it is a little too stiff for Dbl 10's and you would be better off with the swimbait/jerkbait model if you intend to throw big blades. It's nice for heavy plastics though.
