Tried a couple bucktails using round rubber skirt material. I simply slipped the rubber band on a pre-banded skirt onto a metal skirt holder. This did not seem to give me any real bulk. I bought some more rubber skirt packs and want to try again.

How do you get the real nice bulky skirts on your bucktails and spinnerbaits? Do I just need to disassemble multiple skirts and re-assemble with more strands? Or maybe there is something underneath the skirt that holds it out away from the wire for more bulk?

Newb, sorry!

Can you post a picture of what you've done so far? There are different kinds of skirt material and different lengths as well. Also, like you mentioned, there may not be enough strands in the skirt that your using. It would help to know/see what you're using.

I don't buy rubber skirts or skirt material as they are advertised. I buy the bulk round rubber. It comes in a 1 inch wide strip that is 10 feet long from Moore's. You can also buy it by the pound - not sure about from Moore's but Stamina has carried it also.
I take the bulk roll and cut to whatever length I want to use to tie and then tie them on my coil. I think the last bucktails I tied I used about 8-9 inches of material. Just add more rubber to it until you feel it is thick enough for you and then finish off the tie. After you finish your tie just pull on the ends of the material and cut slowly with a scissors to get the material to separate fully. If you use a glue or some sort of sealer over the wrap you should do that before you fray the ends.
I have never used skirt collars, skirt bands, or premade skirts - it might be better than what I do but have not found a reason to switch yet.
Good Luck

I buy the round rubber in 1lb bulk as well. I do mine a different way and make my own skirts. Like said above a 1lb bag come in one expremely long 1" strip. What I cut strips into the lengths i want. They are usually 6-8" long. 4, one inch strips will give you a pretty full skirt. I pull mine into 1/2' strips and stack them. Then I use 15-30lb sevenstrand leader wire which i double loop through a crimp and slide it over the unseparated pads. I pull the tag end of the wire with a pair of vise grips and when tight crimp flat the crimp with another pair of vise grips. Cut off the wire from the ends of the crimp and separate the strands. You can mix and match pads and come up with your own color combinations.

Thanks for the advice guys. I can't post pics of the ones I previously made because they are in my cabin's basement 3 hours away. I basically was using pre-banded round rubber, which it sounds like is not going to cut it if you want nice thick full skirts. I was in Minocqua last weekend and bought a couple multi-packs of pre-banded skirts from R&H. Maybe I'll disassemble a couple of them and try to tie them and post of some pics for a critique. I didn't know there was bulk skirt material, but that makes a lot more sense to get what I am thinking "looks" right.

Well I gave it another try with the new skirts. What I ended up doing is using 2 skirt collars, and 3 skirts. Took one apart and added it to the other two skirts by using some needlenose and a straw. Tedious. Not sure if the skirt will end up getting tangled up that way, but I'll give it a try and see. I'll have to try the bulk material and a coil for my next one.

If you're wanting bulk, the number of strands in the skirting is one of the biggest things to look at. Not all skirts are created equal. I can get the same skirt in three different strand counts, and some of the catalogs do not supply the skirts with a very high strand count. My skirts are all 8" with 62 strands. People ussually comment on how full my skirts are, so this may be the area that you're lacking in. If I double up my skirts on a safety pin style spinner, it is a very full skirt. I stack four skirts on all of my double tens, with bead spacers in between. The spacers seem to give it an even bigger illusion of fullness.

Also, I'm not sure if you're actually using rubber or silicone. I highly recomend round silcone when you're buying skirts. They breathe much better than traditional rubber skirts.
I hope this helps you out. Good Luck!!
