I have a lot of lures, that is true. When you make lures you tend to collect lots of your own work. I get all of the seconds and the screw ups, but I have a box full of gliders that I made that aren't seconds. I also have a couple of Plano boxes that are full of turds that I made. I also have a collection of HRs that I have been working on for years, along with a bunch of old HRs that I bought and then stripped and repainted.
I also make my own bucktails and spinnerbaits. Those add up over the years without even trying.
Lately I've been buying lots of different crankbaits because I love casting them, and have been doing more and more trolling every year and have never been out fishing where I troll exclusively, but that day is coming soon.
Heck if I counted walleye lures and bass lures you could add on many more, because you can't catch walleyes and bass on muskie lures.
Ironically I was going over some papers for my will the other day, and I figure that when I go, my daughter can sell all of my equipment from the boat, rods and reels and lures and not have to worry about paying off extra debts. I always said that when lures went up to twenty bucks a piece that they were an investment as well as playthings and collectables. I'll continue to make lures as a hobby and buy them to use and collect, but they aren't going to go to waste even if some of them never see the water.
On that note, I fished Vermillion last fall and stumbled onto a weedy bay that was loaded with pike. Not huge, but not hammer handles either. Every time that I caught a fish on one of my gliders, I would toss the fish back and put on a new glider. The guy I was with asked me what I was doing, and I told him that I was giving them all some experience. By the end of that afternoon, I had turned 30 virgins into veterans.

I would say I probably have around 500 or so baits, but I only bring about 200-300 in the boat. Some would say I need a bigger boat. I really start out by choosing between the same 5-10 baits but then I refine my bait choice depending on whats moving fish. The other thing is that I absolutely love muskie lures and winters here in eagle river seem to get longer and longer so it gives me something to do when I can't be on the water.

Not enough! Still haven't found one that catches fish every time.

Considering I have been at this since 1966, and bought lures every year, my guess is a lot. I know what lures I have for the most part, and what lures are worth replacing when they are lost or wear out. I add new lures when I see one that does something the others don't. As I've gotten older I've come to the realization I hate sharpening hooks, so I don't add as many lures now as I did before. I also have less disposable income than I did before so there's another reason to cut down on buying lures whose prices keep going up. With the stockpile I've got, I can stop buying them and fish for the rest of my life and not run out. That's how many lures I've got. But will I, no!

If you live long enough and fish muskies most of your life (like 56 years) you accumulate a lot of lures. Plus if get old enough you stand to inherit the lures of friends and family who pass on. Reaching a 1000 is not impossible...actually, probable. Now...how many do I consistently use? Not more than 40-50. But if you have favorites, you tend to have multiples of those baits in differing colors. It mounts up fast. Doesn't stop me from buying, though.

Probably 200-300, just about right I think. I'm slowing down on my purchases, so my desire to have everything and my practical and pragmatic sides must be reaching an equilibrium.

too many....I would say in the neighborhood of 1000...as Koepp posted, I need to go thru and take pics for insurance...
use to have more, but every winter I try to go thru and sell the ones that didn't hit the water the previous year...as someone else said, make sure you have lures that can cover the depths and you know how they run/work etc...

Just took a inventory. A whole 120 baits. I'm gonna do my best to keep it under 150. Of the 120 i think 1/2 never seen the water. This tells me one thing. I need to spend less time EYE fishing and more time SKI fishing.........

Still a rookie, only have about 100 hard baits and about that many bucktails and spinnerbaits. Total maybe 200 baits .

Couple hundred maybe. Been thinning the herd a little at a time. If I buy a lure now, it's either because it does something the others do not, or because its a custom color. You don't need a bait in every color, of course, and customs probably don't catch any more fish. I just like having lures that are different from the ones everyone has.

I probably have less than what I did a few years ago,but i still buy new ones every year. 3 or 400 or so. I have a few favorites that get most of the use and most of the fish. I've also found that one year Grandma's are hot,so I buy a bunch of them. Then it's Shallow Raider, then Depth Raiders, then Big Games, then certain colors ,then....... Who knows what it will be this year. I also have some that I just love the action of but just never use although this year I'm going force myself to use them more if I can put down those blasted double 10's

I have found out that lures catch more fishermen than they do fish.

Like someone said, one of my greatest fears is that after my death, my wife sells them all for what I told her they cost!!
