I know a lot of people to say match the hatch and I'm wondering if you experiment with it. Do you get more fish from matching or standing out a little bit with a crazy color bait? Also it seems to me that from watching Joe Bucher fish, muskies for some reason crush chartreuse color when he's fishing (maybe its just because he's THEE musky hunter too). What is your favorite 'out of the ordinary' colored lure or combo color? I'm wondering this because of two lakes I'll be starting to hit this spring/summer. One has golden shiners as bait fish and the other has alewives. Going to be getting some new baits and those salmo skinners match the match perfectly of those two. I'm wondering if I should get those or something similar or just get more 'stand out' baits. I'm newer to musky fishing and my collection of baits is slowly building up. Trying to get the most important and significant baits as for right now. Thanks for any input!

Posts: 4266 | If I do match the hatch, I will intentionally add some colors that provide a flash of contrast to get the fishes attention. Matching the hatch might work for finicky trout when you try to blend in with the scenery, but with muskies I'd rather stand out in a crowd. It doesn't have to be a total "unmatch", but stripes or spots or bars of high contrast will draw attention to the lure. Beaver

Posts: 2024 | Depends how thick the bait is (schools, clusters, pods of baitfish... not how wide the lure is). Been a few times on Lake Shelbyville where the bait balls in the coves are so thick you start feeling claustrophobic. In those instances tossing a brighter colored bait or something 2X as big as the baitfish has been fairly productive. On the whole I like to match the hatch more than throwing super gaudy baits, though often my natural colored baits have a hint of chartreuse, orange, red, foil, or holoform to make them stand out just a bit. It comes down to confidence, though. Edited by esox50 1/16/2009 4:05 PM
