Posts: 529 Location: Not Where I Want To Be | Looking for some expert advise. I'm looking into purchasing another Musky rod. What i have as of now for casting is a 8' techna av with a curado 300 and a Musky Innovations dawg rod with a 7000 pro rocket on it. I'm looking for something in the middle to throw dc 10's and 13's and bigger cranks. I use my Techna for smaller bucktails topwaters and some smaller cranks and my dawg rod for plastics. I'm not afraid to spend the money. I just don't want to make the wrong choice. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bridgeman P.S. My wife says i'm addicted to this site.

Posts: 1716 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | 8'6" St. Croix Premier. It is high enough quality that it won't break the bank and it has a soft enough tip to work mid size baits, but has plenty of backbone to even throw a mag dawg, 8 oz super D, etc. I am partial to Garcia reels so I would suggest a 7000.

Posts: 7039 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | The two routes I would go would be either to stay in the $120 range and check out the Okuma lineup (do a Search on the site under Okuma and you will find LOADS of info) or go the custom ($350-400) route and contact Frank Bottiliergi (just_one_more_cast, I think, on the site). The Okumas can't be beat at their price point and the customs from Frank are among the best I've seen in the muskie space.

I'd go with a Penn 975, and get a Tica 8'6" Ex Heavy or the Okuma mentioned. Great combo for big blades. Get the Penn on ebay for 225 new range, 125-140ish for the rod. If money is truly no object, get a Calcutta TE with the Trinidad power handle slpapped on it and get a custom 9' footer from a custom rod builder on a Legend or Sling Blade blank

Posts: 2024 | I was going to say what SLAMR said. If money isn't an issue get EXACTLY what you want and go custom (i.e. Frank Bottiglieri). You can work with the rod builder (whoever you choose) to customize the rod to your specifications. Once you go custom it will be hard to go back. I have one custom (does pretty much everything - Top Raiders to Pounders) and wish had the moola to phase out the rest of my rods and replace them with all custom work.
