| I have to agree. I cant imagine why some colors just fly our of my shop. and others that are twice as effective sit here until a smart guy calls. The best example of a super productive color is Olive Frog. Man I have caught Muskies all over the country on Olive frog Lokes, Slashers, NILS, Little Claws and anything else I paint in that pattern. It is just a great color for trolling Muskies. But it is one of my lowest selling colors. Fire perch and Cisco are my highest selling colors. On St Clair the top 4 colors for me that catch fish are in order #1 White Belly Perch #2 Coco Perch( brown barred tan body with gold scales) #3 Olive Frog #4 Black Sucker Two of those are very slow sellers Black Sucker and Olive Frog. There are guys out there like Mark Pauling from Ohio who has over 600 Muskies from Lake St Clair registered in Muskies Incs Lunge log. You would not believe the number of fish and Big fish that he caught on Black Sucker. My wife puts it like this, Baits either catch fish or fishermen. Then there a few colors that do both. pure black is the to go colors for bucktails,but a lots of lure builders seems to forget 1 thing black is also very good for crankbaits, of course thats not the best selling colors,maybe anglers hate to pay same price for a ugly looking black cranks  | |||

| Here are the 4 colors I was talking about. Now it was mentioned aboput throwing a frog colored bait up into the weeds. but that has not been the way it has worked for us. We have tremendous results using Olive frog patterns out on Lake St Clair. Also one many other inland Lakes in Michigan and water color doesnt seem to matter. In 2007 we boated a 30 pound 48 incher on a northern Michigan clear and I mean gin clear lake . We were in 45 feet of water and the lure was out on a Planer board running down about 11 feet. I had a 6 fish day on Lake St. Clair on Olive frog Slashers in 2006 all in 15 to 18 feet of water 5 miles off shore. Murray lake in the middle of Michigan is stained and green and Olive frog is hot there as well. There are no frogs swimming around in 45 feet of water. The spots have a lot to do with why a Musky zeros in on a bait painted with that pattern. But the guy who is looking for a good color for trolling always passes on that pattern unless he has seen it work. W e never leave home with out at least 4 Olive frogs . Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | mota-That is how I have cursed myself into having 40+ colors/bait type! I listen to guys like you  Nothing like trying to herd and keep inventory on 600+ lures and counting. I just got a quote today on putting on a 3rd car garage extra deep so I can deal with it... As for colors, I have gotten a lot of guys telling me the same thing in that the popular colors (my big sellers too) don't catch as many fish as the less prominent colors used (odd balls). I can't believe that fish are "taught" to stay away form baitfish colors but from what some customers tell me that is what it sounds like. Who knows? Maybe a Hindu that was once a muskie can chime in on the subject? | ||
