What do you all think about the switch over in lures to plastic? It seems that many of the major Lure maker are switching over. What the manufactures say is that the lures are more consistent and more durable. What do you all think- are the new plastic lures better?- or just easier and cheaper?

Isn't 'easier and cheaper', if the lure runs as advertised and is more consistent, better?

I don't care what the lure is made out of, I care how it runs.

I will take wood everytime. Nothing like a wood bait as far as I'm concerned. they both will obviously catch fish bau a properly working wood bait is the KING

Why? How does the fish know the difference?

With all the baits out there these days IMO you would be limiting your success by just using baits that are made of a wood or plastic.

I make a lot of lures but I like my wood ones best. I think the ones I make from ABS will last a lot longer but those are not the ones I will hand down to my kids someday. Those will be my Grunts made from Maple as well as the gliders I have made. I do think you will get more consistent action from plastic and those will last longer also. With that said I think wood or plastic (if made right) will both last a life time and boat you some good memories. JMO

PS-Just to contradict myself a little moreā€¦ I would hate it if Suick went to a plastic Suick!!!!

If the Suick runs lik I like them to run and holds up well, I don't care if they are made out of recycled pop bottles.

Don't get me wrong, I also like wood lures. I like plastic lures, too.

I have always been a wood (cedar) guy. Whether casting or trolling...... But look at all the fish, and BIG fish, that have been caught on Bucher lures, Legend lures, Believers, etc.......... Makes you wonder. Might just be a blonde vs brunette issue...
I like what the fish like......haha

I guess that is my question.
Are the new Plastic lures as good as wood?
Is wood better? I always find myself using the older models of wood baits that switched over (Magic makers, slammers, phantoms, vipers, pacemakers) instead of the newer plastic models. Also just once I would like to see an add saying we switched over to plastic and we are sharing the savings with our customers by lowering the prices of our baits.

wood has a mgic. plastic although faster to produce is what it is... with woods and different densities it can be implemented for more uses. i know some like plastic, but i am a woodie guy.

They should drop prices because they managed to find a way to improve the production stream? Maybe they might be trying to make a profit, there isn't much money in lures and advertising, shows, packaging, retailer terms, and more eat margin like an old Pac Man game.

I like a lure that runs well and catches fish.

If Suick could make one that ran like a "waterlogged wood" Suick, I'd buy some for sure.

pretty sneaky.

I buy both. It is probably true you get a consistant lure with plastics. I can't disagree wood has a totally different mood to it. I myself have more plastic than wood. The lure with the best action and also is catching the most fish (whatever the material) is of course going to be hard to beat. Each has there time and purpose, figuring that out is not something I am an expert at.

Plastic all the way, wood gets water soak and will not perform like when they are dry.

I think you would have to look at it lure by lure........some plastics are fantastic and some wood lures are fantastic. However, if you can get a solid plastic lure that swims great it does have some distinct advantges for the both the builder and buyer.

depends on the lure bigtime, all that matters is if the bait catches fish, how many of you have a lure that you think looks good but the fish don`t.

I have boated well over 1,000 musky trolling cranks and hundreds casting cranks.
IMO wood definitely has better action and will turn more fish, "ESPECIALLY AT SLOWER SPEEDS." I have done hundreds of hours experimenting with both wood and plastic. Trolling them at the same depths, same size, same areas, simultaniously. Wood hands down was more productive...especially balsa!!!

With that said...AT HIGHER SPEEDS , I feel the field of play starts to even out because now it is more instinctive reaction. Plastics tend to be alittle heavier, with less dance and wiggle and in turn a better hook up. + will hold up better to rocks and contact.

I feel both have a application to time and place, But at slow speeds I would pick WOOD!!!

have to agree with pikemaster...all other factors being equal, i'd choose plastic. like pikemaster, i fish canadian fly in pike-catching up to 1000 pike each per week. wood is much harder to maintain. my one concern is a HUGE pike or muskie breaking a non through wire plastic bait. I think dick pearson wrote about a broken topraider recently. also, better hookups with plastic sliding in toothy mouth. so, solid, through wire baits(eg rumbler) get my vote. hey steve, would you like to see the 8 and 10 inch weagles in plastic like the baby weagle?
