I've got a bunch of reels in need of some maintenance and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations based on past experience with some of the local repair shops.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It's faster to send them to Thorne Brothers who send them to wayzata bait, I have had longer repairs when I drop them direct.

Speedy return at wayzata bait? I have had one reel in there since april and one since june. Repairs are still not done. Talked to Tim two weeks ago and says he still has not received parts for the repairs........hmmm

I've taken two Abu Garcia reels in there to get fixed and they were returned in the same shape that I turned them in. Not really sure what the deal was? Is it that Abu reels are that bad that they can't be fixed? I paid like $45 and I will never bring anything in there again. Just my experience.....

I have experienced the same thing. They were returned to me fixed but it took forever. I was in contact every two weeks for an update and all I got was we'll get to them. Also, when dropping off I tried to explain what the issue was but I got the impression I wasn't being listened to. Then when I picked them up and asked what was wrong I got the "Sorry, I don't work on the reels...$50 please" I too was told this was the spot, I'll go somewhere else next time.

I had the same experience at Wyzata bait. They replaced some parts, but the reels didn't seem to be in any better condition. They still grawled and squeked. When you go to the sports shows this winter, go to the ABU Garcia both and talk to the reps. They gave me an address to a distributor in Spirit Lake Iowa. I sent them the reel that I had a problem with and they sent it back repaired free of charge. I don't know if it was a one time deal or what, but it's worth cheking out.

"trails end" in fridley does a good job.

Hmm, I've only brought in reels in the winter when they were not in use and it took a little while but not months, maybe 3-4 weeks. I suppose if it was durning season that would be frustrating.

My suggestion: Buy Shimano Calcutta TEs. They pay for themselves in repairs. Every reel is going break if you use it enough, but Shimano's platinum service warranty is free, no matter what happens to the reel... bend it, bind it, slip it, grind it... send it back to Shimano in Irvine, CA and it comes back in about a week, good as new!

And that's who wayzata bait orders their parts through....also where thorne sends their reels, IIRC.

Same experience w/ Wayzata and the repair center they use, i brought in 2 reels and they were 2 weeks apart, picked up the first one and seemed like nothing was done to it and didnt fix anything, didnt even pick up the 2nd one, they can keep it. I wouldnt bother bringing in the reel, i am going to try to fix them myself or just buy a new one, great suggestion about the Calcutta.

My advice would be to work on the reels yourself. Tear a reel apart and just try to figure out how everything works. If you know how a reel works, they are easy as pie to diagnose and fix. Last year, I was in the same position as you are, I had a dozen busted reels and was about to send them all to get fixed and somebody on mfirst told me just to fix it myself. Majority of reels just needed a thorough cleaning. Others that needed new parts, I fixed on average around $7 per reel.

So now that you have so much free time with the hard water and all, seriously consider trying to fix them up yourself. Start with an Abu if you got one, as it's pretty much made out of nuts and bolts.
