I'm looking to upgrade my finders for my Xmas present. Any recommendations on the Humminbird SI units versus Lowrance HDS?

Thanks,

John

I'd check out the SI units first. I have a Lowrance 113, and it's a great unit...but, the side imaging is great technology. If you're looking for a unit to help you learn the waters you are fishing, I think the SI is the better way to go. I am thinking about getting a small SI unit to compliment my Lowrance. The 113 I have would serve the same purpose it does now. I run a 75/25 split screen with the map and sonar. I care more about the bottom contours than bottom content. With the detail of the chips out there today, you can sometimes fish without the sonar. I think the SI would teach you so much about the spots you already know by being able to see the bottom like never before. I'm really impressed with what I've seen of them so far. I guess if you can only get one it's a toss up.

I bought a small SI unit to go along with my 113 last spring. Just sold the SI as I find the SI feature not very practicle.

SI works well if you go in a straight line. When you turn the boat or TM, so does the head, giving you a skewed image of what is really down at the bottom. While the SI looks cool, I say Lowrance all the way.
