My old sonar unit finally bit the dust a few weeks ago. I'm looking to replace it with a new model and am looking for suggestions. I'd like to keep the pricetag under $800. GPS is preferred but Navionics is optional. Lowrance, Garmin, Hummingbird?? Model #'s? Any suggestions?

I bought my first Depthfinder/GPS unit this year and went with the Lowrance 27C. Once word got out that you had to set them for shallow water as they are not preconfigured for that it worked perfectly. It's a fantastic unit. I went with the Lakemaster MN chip and it opens up a whole new dimension of fishing. You'll find reefs and bars you never knew existed even on your home lake as long as it's on the chip. It's a little more than $800 but i can't recommend going down to the 522 model. To run in split screen mode you really need the 7 inch screen otherwise you'd be toggling buttons all the time. You won't be disappointed

Drmusky,

Lowrance just released their new HD lineup and I'd highly suggest taking a look at these units. They have not hit the stores yet but will in January. Being on the tournament trails all summer, I heard a ton of buzz about the capabilities these new units will have. I personally can't wait to get mine. I'd suggest taking a look. Here is the link to the Lowrance website but also the link to Bass Pro where they provide a price point for the units.

Lowrance High Def:

Bass Pro:

The new units are the top four on this link. The HDS-5 looks to be right in your price range. However, the HDS-7 looks to be pretty close too. Take a look, I think you'll like what you see.

Lundbob,

Lowrance came out with an updated software version where getting a bottom reading in heavy weeds has improved. The new 2.4 version is much much better, I've personally used this version on both my LCX-27's the last part of the season and it worked great. You might want to consider downloading it.

I would definitely recommend getting the largest screen you can afford. I bought a 520 this year, it's just too small. Great for a fish finder but for most navigation it's a PITA, IMO.

FWIW, I did the 2.4 upgrade and it didn't change the shallow water flashing for me. I've also made the recommended settings changes and it still flashes and has the "issue".

I'm pretty sure i have the 2.4 update but i will double check. What really made the difference for me was following the instructions in the video made by thorne bros.

Thanks

you can pick up a 7" Lowrance 27c for $910 at hodgesmarine...that is a very nice combo unit...if you will just be running gps on it...not sonar you can easily get by with a 5" screen, 5200c internal gps by Lowrance for $457...depends on what you need it for and where...but both of those are tried and true...I have allllways been leary of a first yr product of any kind..whether it's a snowmobile, atv, gps, outboard, etc etc..they always find bugs...those 2 above have the bugs worked out...imo.
