| F-16 Emergency Thu 05-30-2002 , 10:09 am Plane drops fuel tanks into Lake Mendota during emergency landing. Just before 9:30 Thursday morning, a F-16 fighter jet dumped both of it's fuel tanks into Madison's Lake Mendota. The jet was having mechanical and electrical problems and was attempting an emergency landing at Truax Field. Each tank holds about 250 gallons of jet fuel. Eyewitnesses tell 27 News the impact of the tanks on the water made a huge, dramatic explosion. At this hour, Madison emergency and clean up crews are on the scene at both Lake Mendota and Truax Field. No one was injured. Officials tell 27 News the tanks have leaked fuel into the lake. A clean up effort is underway. Watch 27 News at Noon, 5 and 6pm for the latest on this developing story. If you have home video of the tank impact or immediate aftermath call the 27 Newsroom at 273-2727. | |||

| Now I know I've tried some extreme measures to put fish in the boat, but this is over the top even for me[:0] | |||

| There is a picture of the spill on the Channel 3 website: http://www.channel3000.com/news/1487358/detail.html. | |||

| I hope they can get it contained otherwise a potential huge blow for Madison Chain. Jono [:blackeye:] | |||

| Thats one of the craziest things I've ever seen! At first I thought you were joking about that but it's serious business! | |||
| |||
| I guess Lake Mendota will get a "NO SMOKING" sign now at the launch. | |||

| On the news last night they said that they had contained it. They also said that with the warm temps, wind and wave action they expected the vast majority of the spill to be evaporated by this evening. They are also praising the pilot for how he hadnled the situation. Had one crash and burn in Madison a couple years ago when he tried to make the strip with tanks and all. Thanks to all the the vets and armed services people for all that you did/do for our country. You are not forgotten. | |||

| It's a good thing that this happened on a quiet day imagine what could have happened if it was a weekend with all the Boaters and fishermen on the lake. Glad that no one or the enviroment was damaged | |||
