Is it possible to get a 3" or so extension for an existing rod? I have a few rods that I would like the butt section to be about 3" longer so that it fits nicely under my arm. If this is possible, about how much does it cost to have done and where in central IL can do it?

I have most of my rods extended by 3"-4". I do mine at Thorne Bros for about $20.

To find some rod shops go to Google and click on the Maps link towards the top. Now, put in your zip code. next type in "near fishing rod" right behind your zip code. This should list local businesses near your zip code. Just change the text if you want to look for different shops.

The cheapest route would be just to add a rod balancing kit. It would add a couple inches and lighten the feel of your rod.

How do you spilt the balancers? I'm curious because I have a balancer on every one of my rods, and have never had a problem.
I've lengthened and counter weighted several flippin' sticks that I have. First I would get a scrap piece of rod blank and jam it in the butt end after cutting the cap off. I'd brush the scrap piece with 2-ton epoxy and tap it into the butt of the existing blank, and then add single pieces of cork rings over the extension. After it dried, I would sand it so that the balancer could slide on. They are solid as a rock. If you need scrap pieces, call Reinke Bros. in Milwaukee....414-383-5591

the diameter of the cork is at the 1 1/8" limit and they split on me when they sit in the garage.

They split because the rubber gets brittle and the cork swells, or the water in it freezes? I've always left them in the basement, and couldn't figure out how they would crack.
If you just want to extend it, get a 6" piece of scrap and glue it inside the butt end of your rod after you saw the but cap off and clean it out. Once it's glued in place, glue individual cork rings around the exposed piece of blank. If you want to add weight, you can epoxy muskie lure bucktail bodies inside the butt section and the blank piece. I did that to some $300 walleye rods, while others gasped in shock. But after the epoxy dried and I glued the butt cap back on, I had the most well-balanced walleye rods that anyone had ever felt.
