My dad has an opportunity to buy a brand new 16.5' (90" beam) alumicraft boat for about $2,800. I can't find the brand aywhere on the net to take a closer look. What are your opinions about this brand of boat? Who makes them? Thanks.

I have not heard anything bad about them. IMHO there are better laid out boats but this is a used one obviously and if it's a good deal get it. But back then the layouts by comparisons may be different.

Ranger, they are made in St. Peter MN I belive and are a very popular brand of boat in the MN and WI area. I have owned two in the past a 15' model F8 and a 16' Lunker. Both were pretty good boats with the nod going to the 15 footer. It was an older model and built out of extremly heavy gauge alum. We did have some problems with the rivets in the 16' but was mostly from in Canada with way too much stuff and weight in the boat. Big waves and overloaded created some problems. Overall good boats however, top of the line Aluminum rigs.

I have an alumacraft mv tex special cs 16 foot bass boat and the only problem with it is storage and teh front deck doesn't go all the way to the console. In my opinion they are very well priced compared to competitors like lund. I talked to a guy that owned a camp and had had many rental boats, he said other than lund that alumacraft was the best by far. By the way, where is this alumacraft located? I think I saw the same boat in the paper.

Thanks for the responses. The boat is located in the Detroit area, not sure of the exact location. Interesting situation - the guy opened two boat dealerships just before the recession hit - he's since bailed out of the biz (bankrupt?) but still has a couple boats, including this 16.5 footer to unload.

A buddy of mine has a Alumacraft 17 foot, single side console with a 90 merc on the back. I'm not sure of the year but I think it's not more than 5 years old.

It is a very nice boat. His seems to have plenty of storage in it. I like how wide it is. We can get 8 rods, 3 large plano muskie boxes, rain gear, coolers, landing net, cradle, extra clothes and any of the other gear needed for a day with plenty of room left over for fishing. We don't seem to trip over each other in it. There is a lot of underdeck storage in the bow. I have looked at them in the dealers and when I go to get my new boat (in a couple of years) I will definently give Alumacraft a hard look, but I still have to make up my mind between glass and aluminium first.

I own a 16'6" Alumacraft boat, i have owned it for 7 years now and have enjoyed it totally, i can float that baby in about 6 inches of water with the motor trimmed. Easy to handle with one person. I put a 60 horse Merc on it , instead of the 40 that it came with. I also built a platform on the back, wich was easy to do. If its the same model it has a small 8 inch pwide strip across the back, and the gas tank is located under neath, and is out of the way. The platform i built sits nicely on top of the inside rails i will call them, up to the live well. Nice live well for crappies, or resusitating a muskie if need be. That might be a good topic also, if otheres have ever stuck one in the live well to recop. But anyway it rides well and handles waves rather well. The price sounds right, and i would have no quallms about snappin it up. The transom is a tad small, so if your doing alot of back trolling for walleyes, it may pose a problem, but for muskies i havent a bad word about it.

Stinky Nets to all and to all a good nite[]

Check out the NADA website for value information on any boat: http://www3.nadaguides.com/SectionHome/Marine.asp?UserID=062CF4D992...

Alumicrafts have been around a long time. My dad bought a 14 footer in 1965 and sold it in 2000. It held up well: up to 6 people fishing in it every weekend and 4 sons and some friends learned to water ski with it. We saw it Memorial Day on the water, still going strong.
