| Does anyone else fish for Muskies with a flyrod?

| Dear Tom, I''m certainly not strange but perhaps I can help....Read an article a year or so ago about a guy that caught a big one on a flyrod. They fish for about everything else w/ them! Buddy of mine is an outdoor writer + I was going to take him striper fishing using a flyrod but never had the chance to hook up. He eventually hired a guide + said it was a blast. [:sun:] |

| I've done it, it's a lot of work, but can be very rewarding. Pretty effective here in the spring - water is clear and sight fishing is the method. Lot's of fly - tying materials out here in the west, so experimentation often runs rampant at my house[;)]. I use a Loomis GL3 8'9" 8 wt w/a saltwater line (gotta turn those big flys over w/ something) and a Ross C-3 reel. |

| I will admit to being one of the "strange breed". I use a St. Croix 9' 9 wt rod, Martin reel, with 8 wt sinking line to throw the big flies. I also have a Pflueger 9' 8/9 wt rod with 8 wt floating line for some of my smaller flies.
I have caught 3 muskies on flies, the largest was 35" and it was a blast. I spotted the fish sunning itself and placed my slow/sink fly right over its head. It instantly inhaled the fly. It was then that I was alerted by my wife that she was nursing our 6-week old daughter and was sitting on the net. The fish tail danced 4 times while she worked on getting the net for me. Meanwhile, our 2-year old boy was scrambling to get away from all the commotion.
I used to spend a little time with a fly almost every time I went muskie fishing but I haven't done it as much the last couple of years. I think it could be a very effective way of converting followers into strikers.

| Thanks for responding. I use a 9'' 10 wgt with a Pfluger reel. I landed a small one last year on Lake Minnetonka on a diver I tied. I have had several big ones explode on the fly, but no solid contact. I''ll keep throwing, but I am not exclusive.
