Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Have a choice of 2 lakes to fish. Lake 1 is 3700 acres max depth 140' Glacier lake clear water lots of structure water temps 58 and falling. Lake 2 5600 acres 24' max not much structure other than a couple rock piles and weeds all the way around and a fair reed bed. Temps in the upper 40's. Both hold good numbers and size. Lake 2 has put out last 2 state records. Last few years lake 1 has outproduced lake 2 and we have not fished lake 2 more than a couple times. What lake would you pick for the upcoming weekend with the current conditions and forcast of wet cold weather rest of the week.

Posts: 8828 | temps hovering around 58 degrees would lead me to think turnover is either happening or it's about to. If it hasn't already, the cold temps will probably be enough to get it going. I'd fish #2.

Posts: 462 Location: Madison Wi. Chain | I would fish lake one. After turnover fish can be anywhere. Just before turnover I find that fish are moving into shallow water especially weeds. Lots of fun fishing topwater in the fall. BG

Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Our fish don't go for topwater, seen 1 caught on a topwater ever here on Lake 1 and that caused quite a stir among the local muskie guys. May try lake 2 at least on Sat just for a change of scenery.

Posts: 153 Location: Storm Lake, IA | West was pretty tough this past sunday for me...used to fish spirit hard in the fall catching at least one big fish a year, but after hearing that most of the fish went into east have stopped fishing spirit and moved to west. I do think I will be back out on Spirit at least one time this fall.

take the contrarian approach. fish the lake this week that was tougher to fish last week. eventually the fish have to feed. If you go to the lake that fished well last week, more fish with full bellys and sore mouths.

Posts: 79 Location: South Dakota | I would fish lake #1 and throw topwater for atleast 2 hours just because it is my favorite way to catch fish. We did catch a 37" on topwater early september on #1. Other than that, we had one follow on topwater all year, with about 150 hours of topwater throwing. I wish someone had told me earlier that they don't bite topwater on west ![]() You can't imagine how miffed I was after throwing topwater all spring and summer, and then to bring my buddy up one night....He pulls a Maas Maruder out of the package and 20 cast later he's got a fish!!! I ask you....Where is the justice in that? ![]()
