I was just looking through some posts and pictures the fish look to be the same size and have that unique marking on there face not sure if they were caught at the same lake or have any of the information I just know they have the same spot in the same spot. Coincidence or same fish? Anyone know what the mark would come from?

What marking? Are you referring to the tag? Different fish.

the marks on the cheek are tags for DNR survey information. they check them during netting surveys and track the fish's growth, location, etc. for research purposes. this kind of information helped them make the decision to dramatically reduce the numbers of fish stocked into Wingra, and in just a few "short" years people are seeing bigger fish as a result.

it's relatively common to catch fish in any of the Madison lakes that have the tags, and you can write the DNR biologist and he'll send you back all the information on the fish such as how old it is, when it was first tagged, and what it's growth rate has been.

Looks like the markings on the tail are different as well as the back fin.

Not even close...look at the fin just in front of the rear...bottom side. One has a chunk missing, the other does not. The side tag looks totally different as well.
