This kind of falls into the 'tackle and equipment' and 'boats and motors' categories, so I thought I'd put it here.

To everyone who is using 8.5 and longer (non-telescoping) rods, how many of you have rod lockers that can hold these things? Are you finding you can make modifications to your lockers, maybe cut off ends of rod tubes? Or some lockers longer than rated? I like to keep my stuff below deck, and I'm looking for a new boat, AND I'd like to add a few rods longer than my current 8 footers. Am I SOL? I know some Tuffies hold 8.5, what else?

I'm currently looking at ranger 1860, 619 and 620... any luck getting longer rods in any of these?

Just lay them on the deck when traveling.

I have all 8'6-9'6 rods and have no need for a big rod locker. When driving from Indiana to MN, all my rods lay on the deck of my boat. When I am moving spots, all my rods lay either on side side by the console or across the front deck.

You can not fit them in a Triton 202 or 215.. Why not look at the telescoping rods? I admit I was also skeptical at first, but those new 8'6" Okuma rods are awsome, affordable, come with a lifetime warranty and fit in any rod locker. You really don't have much to loose by at least trying one out...

My Tuffy 1760 will hold around 10 rods up to 8', and will hold two 8'6"s. I agree with JCl above, the Okumas are not only great rods (8'6" XH for big plastics and double 10s, the 8'6" H for topwaters, cranks, medium bucks) at a great price, but the breakdown feature makes it so easy to fit the rods in the lockers that I find myself leaving the Loomis and Lamiglas rods at home more because it's just easier to bring the Okumas.

My 16.5' bassboat's rod locker holds 8.5'ers. Some boats can have the rod lockers modified for larger rods if there is a barrier. Mine is open all the way to the bow so I didn't have to do that.

Same here,I use the telescopic rods as well with no problems. You can buy the new V210 From G3 and you can get rods in the box up to 9'. It's just money...

It's also a plus when your going somewhere to fish without your boat to be able to fit them in a car like I will do next week.

a full-size rod locker is definitely worth having.

i'm uncomfortable leaving my rods laying out on the deck when traveling/trailering. it is too easy for someone to walk by and steal one if they're out in the open when i stop to eat or get gas, plus my boat insurance rider for gear (like most) requires gear to be locked up if you're going to get reimbursed in case of theft - ie., there has to be signs of break-in. when trailering i lock mine in the center rod locker of my Tuffy X190 and i'm worry free.

the tubes also hold the rods individually separate so that they're not the rubbing and bouncing which scratches the rods and reels.

The rod locker on a 01' 620 will fit 9' rods, not in all tubes but there are a couple that will........

My 205 Triton holds 8'-6" rod with ease, not sure about the newer ones. Wish they would still make this model.

However, I also use the 8'-6" Okuma telescoping rods and not only do they fit easily in my rod locker in the boat but they also fit into my short box Cheve Pick-up. Even better they are great muskies rods.

The 620 Tiller has two large rod boxes that take rods up to 9-6". Plenty of room.

619 dual console...no go on my 9'er...i leave it out. When traveling distances I cover my boat and keep a close eye on it....park it where I can see it from my table when stopping for food, etc...

Thanks for all the input. I wasn't knocking telescoping rods, in fact thinking of picking up an okuma or two, my point was just that I know they'll fit just about anywhere.

I have a 620. Like Mike and others, I just drive around with the rods lying on the deck in a "brushpile" and don't mind at all. I use the rod lockers for storage of baits and other stuff.

I will reinforce what other have already have said - the 8'6" telescoping rods from Okuma are fantastic rods. They're great rods at any price, when you consider the small price tag they are truly awesome. I don't have any yet but have thrown with them using clients's rods. What surprises me is that the telescoping part of the rod doesn't seem to be a problem. Like a lot of guys, I thought the telescoping part would be a vulnerable spot that would be failure-prone. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem. Also, I've had clients launching big plastics without a problem. That telescoping part seems to hold up pretty good.

Just a couple ideas. Don't worry about leaving the rods on the deck. If you have to have them locked for security, consider the telescoping rods instead of a new boat.

What is the model name for the okuma telescoping rods?

Nevermind--think I found it: EVX-C-861H-T

We run a Crestliner 1850 and when running lay them backwards across the connector piece of the passenger console. They don't move much if any. Check out Lambeau and Agrimm's video, you'll see how Andy has his rods laid out up front.

I have an 8'6" one-piece that doesn't fit in the locker and just lays on top when we are trailering to and from the lake, but at all other times that rod (and the others) are out on the deck.

2004 Crestliner 1750 Fishhawk will take an 8.5' rod. They now call this the 1700 Fishhawk and the new 1750's have a center rod locker in the bow which I am not sure will take a rod of this length. Slide the rod along the freeboard and there is a slot that leads into you front compartment allowing longer rods to be stored on this edge. I keep an 8.5' and 8.0' in the locker on this side along with two 7.5' rods. See the attached photo showing the rod tips in the front storage compartments.

Esox50 - if you have the side rod locker I would bet you can do the same.

A tip for preventing a mess in your rod locker - after cliping the free end of your line on the hoop on the bottom of your rod, wrap it around the rod and hoop it on one of your rod guides so that the line can't snag other rods. See attached photo which describes this better than I can type it. This is especially helpful when using the slot because when you flex the rod withoug wrapping the free line, it tends to open away from the rod guides making it easier to snag other rods.

I have a Ranger 618 VS and can get three 8'6" rods in my locker w/rod tubes, wish it didn't have the rod tubes like the older 690's and older Tuffy's. But the rod locker holds 7 rods, shortest one will hold a 7'6" the others will take longer ones.

Many bass boats have rod lockers will hold longer rods with ease even though they don't advertise it.

Trust me, I've tried. My custom has an extended butt and is about 2" too long to fit.
