Subject: VIDEO: CPR Done Right!

after seeing a number of videos on YouTube and even here on MuskieFirst that featured fish handled too much or kept out of the water for an extended period of time, i thought it would be worth putting up a video of how it looks when it's done properly.

while fishing with Andy Grimm this weekend, he tied into this nice 46" that ate a pounder worked deep along a weedline. Andy's an experienced angler, and it shows: we talked through each step of the process, made sure everything was ready to go beforehand, worked efficiently, and the fish swam away strong.

a great experience with a great fish...and one that's still out there for you to try and catch next weekend!

that carpet takes off the protective slime.

if you watch the video again, look more closely when we're measuring the fish and you'll notice that Andy actually has a clear plastic bump board mounted to the floor in the rear of his boat. it is about 6" wide, with a measuring tape underneath it. Andy's boat and gear is prepared for each contingency.
the fish is laying on this clear bump board and not on the carpet, which will help to preserve the slime coat while it is being measured.

Andy's idea to mount that bump board to the floor is not only a great idea to measure AND protect the fish, but is also efficient and minimizes clutter in/around the boat.

I'd like to do the same thing in my boat............when I get around to it.........eventually...........someday

I wish more people would leave the fish in the net for unhooking like in this video. All it took for me was a few bad releases and I just couldn't get over it so now everything is done like this.

with water.
from the lake.
in my boat i've got a dunwright bumpboard and i just dunk it in the lake.
in Andy's boat you just toss a couple handfuls of water onto the board.

extended contact with anything, even a wet bumpboard could potentially remove some of the slime coating. the key, as seen here in this video, is to reduce the amount of time the fish is out of the water, and also reduce the amount of time it's skin comes in contact with anything.
there's no need to waste time measuring and re-measuring fish down to 1/16th of an inch. in this case it's on the bumpboard for about 5 seconds, just long enough to get a quick measurement before being transferred back into the lake.

Thanks Mike for making "us" look good...but a little communication and good practice can help with all fish. Of course there are always was to be better - like use one camera and send the other person a picture , measure in the water before/after picture, use a cradle, water release w/ release picture only - etc...
About the bump-board - I have a cup in the boat I fill up and dump on the board before the fish is on it... it's easy and fairly safe. I'm one who hates disorganization and clutter, plus it saves time. One still needs to support the weight of the fish when lowering to avoid unwanted thrashing.

Looks like I'll be spending another 30$ at R&H's on Friday.

To anyone who wants to criticize their efforts, post your own video of a release and prove how much better you are at it.

To the anglers, congratulations! A beauty of a fish that anyone would be happy to catch.

On a side note, if we care about these fish so much how come we are trying to blast the sides of their face off with razor sharp hooks? Any release attempts are better than nothing. Their technique is fast, efficient and better than most.

I usually carry a windex bottle full of lake water with me and just before I measure my fish on my bump board, I squirt the bump board, pick the ski out of the net,and right onto a wet bumpboard! Nice job fellas!
