Posts: 1460 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Never thought it would happen to me, but last night for the second time this season I boated a fish after announcing, "Last Cast". Nice healthy 36" that had been tagged by the local DNR. In July after catching a 44 after announcing "Last Cast" I swore it would never happen again in my life....and last night bingo.... Wierd, wild stuff. Maybe it's more common than I thought?

Posts: 159 Location: NYC (and many weeks in MN during summer) | last summer I announced last cast while throwing a magnum musky buster. Sure enough, a big girl follows to the boat and takes a little tiny nip at the dressed treble. Couldn't get her to eat on the eight, so I proceed to open up my tackle box and unload it one at a time onto her spot. Needless to say, I didn't get her and as it turned out, it wasn't even my last cast. I bet that girl sat under the boat looking at me for a LONG time. | My Muskies Inc. Chapter has an evening fishing league and we fish until 9pm. Two years ago with about 15 seconds to go I announced "last cast" and caught a 37 incher. I didn't win the money, as there were about 20 fish caught, but I did get points. That was the only time I've done it.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | About 6 years ago my girlfriend and I told some friends that if either of us got our first 50"er on our Canadien vacation together, that we'd get married. It was the last night of the trip and we were working an area where a biggee blew up her topraider an hour before. We worked through the area, she put her rod down and started putting the boat lights in, and I announced last cast. 6' from the boat, a 50.5" sucked the Rylure wobbler I was using down from about 12" beneath the surface....... so... we were one week from our 5th wedding anniversery two weeks ago and a 51" grabbed an AC-10 on what turned into our last cast of that trip. Just talked to a friend last night and he got a 52" on his last cast on his week on Vermilion last Saturday. Edited by Reef Hawg 8/14/2008 7:41 AM

| my partner and I trolled were giving up after a long day trolling up ZERO, when my partner took the rod out of the rod holding and was reeling it in and a fish was following it. He flipped the lever and went into a freespool figure 8 and the fish nailed the bait on the first turn. | |||

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Right after Frank Schneider passes away I called "Last cast for Frank". He was smiling on me that day and I caught a 45"er. I could have kept fishing, but I knew that it was time to go after that.

Posts: 139 | It's happened many times to me, but never while Muksy fishing. The only problem is that after catching any fish on your "last cast", you end up spending at least another 1/2 hour on the lake trying for one more.

Posts: 1460 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Andy--sticking around----yeah---probably would have fished more after releasing, but on the first time it happened I actually kep my partner out longer than his back should have---he has serious back issues---so I figured it was just meant to be and packed up after releasing This week it was with my wife who was subbing for league---raining, dark--she was ready to go in and we only had a few minutes left anyhow.

Posts: 999 | You always say one last cast but it turns into two because the last one wasn't far enough or wasnt far enough to the right or well your partner is still reeling his in so you have plenty of time for one more! I've caught a few fish on the "last cast" but i've also caught fish on ending the day trolling and cranking/ripping in the boards! Mr Musky

Posts: 145 | Night fishing on a local creek by myself I said "last cast" after missing the same musky all evening and I was ready to go home. So I threw it out there and right as I lifted my bucktail out of the water a 36- 38" ski launced itself out of the water onto the bank at my feet flopped around in my headlight beam then slipped back in. I laughed out loud, collected my stuff, and went home. I don't know if I could have been happier if I had landed her.

Posts: 137 | On my very first successful muskie fishing day ever, I had it happen. My brother and I hit the waters after an unusual warm spell here in Indiana melted the ice in late February a little more than three years ago. We had struggled to catch a muskie for several months during the fall of the year before, with lots of close calls and follows but nothing to show for it. Until that beautiful day. We were trolling with the electric trolling motor on a trolling motor only lake, and I finally got a fish on and landed it. I will always remember that excitement of having my first fish, but I had no idea how exciting that day would become. I caught another trolling later that day, and my brother got his first muskie casting that afternoon too, which put us both into a tailspin. Then, near the end of day, we both lost fish that we had managed to get hooked up to in a very short period of time. We kept fishing as it grew darker hoping the magic would continue, but it seemed as if it was finally over and we decided to call it a day and enjoy our success. I dropped my brother off at shore and he went to back the boat trailer into the water. I decided to quickly use that time to make a few casts near the ramp, where I had hooked up with my last lost fish only an hour or so before. After several casts to the spot, he had the boat trailer in the water and got out waiting for me to land the boat. I threw one more cast just feet from the boat trailer and proceeded to crank my legend outcast in. Just when I started to reel it, my brother yelled at me with a question. "How are you going to land a fish if you do catch one by yourself in the boat?" I answered pretty quickly, after considering the fact that we only had a cradle with us, and knowing that he wanted to get going, and I yelled back, "don't worry, this is my last cast." Those were the magic muskie catching words, and that's exactly the cue that the fish apparently needed to go balistic. Baaam. I freaked and turned the transom trolling motor on high while I fought the fish as it went airborne and wrapped itself up in the line. Somehow I headed the boat for shore and drove right up onto the ramp, throwing the cradle to my brother who walked out into the freezing water and heroically landed my fish. It was a beautiful fish, and I was stoked, although I had no idea how big it might have been, 36"? 39"? We didn't really care. We hadn't measured a fish at all that first day, because we were so worried about getting them unhooked and it was so hard to stop shaking that I have to say that it must have slipped our minds. We forgot to even think about the fact that the cradle had a measuring tape in it, but it didn't matter, they were awesome fish, and a great way to break into the sport. I've tried calling out last cast several times since then, but it hasn't worked since. I think the muskies only hit when they know you really mean it. But it sure comes back to me thinking about it, and by the length of the post, I guess you could tell we had a very memorable day.
