They ALL break, get the one with the best policy and the one that best fits your application. Bass Pro Mania reels for me $99.99

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | 4 - 400 calcutta's here and they are now on their 3rd - 10th seasons. i like the "b" paddles and replaced handles on the older models ... just get them serviced each year and that's it. if you get calcuttas you won't have to worry about what's new cause you won't need to replace them ... they are a great product proven over time. search archives for how to repair reels ... you won't find much discussion about calcuttas

Posts: 159 Location: NYC (and many weeks in MN during summer) | if its just one reel to cover many different applications, and price isn't much of an issue, then IMO, the Calcutta 400 TE cant be beat. I run all shimano's, except one okuma red Isis, and the 400 can do everything if it has to. Shimano also stands behind their products, although I've been running calcuttas, currados and now also the trinidad and have NEVER had a problem! Randy

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | one thing to think of too is to use the 400B .. the only real difference is the drag system from it to the te but much less money. some people might notice the difference and want to spend the extra coin, but especially if you free-spool you would be more than pleased with the b model. i personally don't see anything in the te that makes it worth the extra money over the b models. all this being said, i bought my reels years ago and have no need or interest to change. friends of mine have since used many lunas, avids etc... the best reports i hear from lots and lots of time on the water is from the induron from okuma at a lower price, so although my experience would make me want to go where i've had success with the calcutta's i will admit if i had to go buy a reel today i'd be interested in trying the induron too.

Posts: 59 | I have an Abu Garcia 6600 C5 Mag. It has a magnetic brake in case your casting into a 30 mph wind and don't have good thumb braking skills. It holds plenty of 80 lb stealth and isn't too hard to pull anything i've used yet. I think it was like 95 bucks or something, and there's a $15 power handle you can get. I've heard the Shimanos are nice for double 13s, but don't have any yet, so i'm still good.

Posts: 123 Location: Bemidji, MN | I purchased two Daiwa Luna 300s and love em but I'll see how long they hold up...of course will get them serviced/lubed up to keep em in good working condition. Calcutta TE's are nice reels but they are out of my price range!

Posts: 909 | Madison is right! If money is an issue, There is nothing wrong with the pete maina rod or reel. I have a couple that has been pretty much trouble free for 5 or 6 yrs. now. If money isn't a problem, go with the TE! I love mine!
