Subject: knipex, is there a difference?

I have used the 10 inch knipex for about 10 years now. I gave them to my brother and need to get another pair. I was going to get the same ones, but noticed for 10-15 dollars more they have smaller models. Are they worth the extra cash? Do they work that much better? I always like the smaller head on the 10 inch model for working on fish..thanks for the info...Ben

Absolutely there worth there value imho. I've used the cheaper ones before and just don't quiet cut like the Knipex. I've got friends who have cheaper ones now and don't hold up nearly as nice as the Knipex. I'd definitely stay with the Knipex if I were you, won't go wrong.

Thanks, I am going to stay with the Knipex, my question was are they other knipex models worth the extra cash. At TB's the model I used is 49.95, they have other models at are a bit smaller and are 55 and 64 dollars. Was curious if those models are worth the money.Sorry for the confusion..thanks again for the help,Ben

you can find used pairs of them on ebay.. but seriosly dont go cheap . when some accidents have happened they have saved my butt. my daughter got a hook through her ankle and luckly the hook went all the way through and it was in tough skin did'nt even bleed. kut the hook and slid it through easy as butter. and how many fish it has been a life saver....bill

No confusion, I followed your first post with no problems at all...

The pair I have I got from a Snap-On or a Matco dealer, can't recall off the top of my head. Considerably cheaper and I like them much better than the knipex I got rid of. Can't go wrong with the knipex though, they'll do the trick, but if you've got the ear of a tool dealer or something like that investigate that possibility. Might save some coin and you might be suprised at what else is out there.

I've never used the 10" model but have heard that the 8" co-bolt cutters cut hooks with less effort than the 10" center cutters.
Yes the working end on the 8" looks a little bigger than the 10" but i've never had a problem getting to hooks and cutting them.

Ben, the smaller Knipex cutters are really nice, I've got two of the smaller ones and a pair of the tens. They work just fine in and around fish-mouthes. That said, the lever action cutters will cut faster and easier, with less hassle. Have both use both, don't have any REAL preference as long as I can get my hands on at least one pair of them.

I'm not real familiar with all of the Knipex products. Were the 10" cutters you had a side cutter type tool? I have the 8" co-bolt mini bolt cutters. I have cut quite a few hooks with them, and even on the big 8/0 Mustad 3551 hooks, they snip them right off with nearly no effort. I would REALLY recommend the 8 inch co-bolt cutters.

I have a pair of Home Depot HKPorter that cost me about $15 and they work very well. Two years ago I took a Mag Bulldawg apart in Canada to save a 38" pike. Less than 10 seconds and five hook wires sniped so we could get the Dawg out and work on getting the hook points out. With that said, I had a pair of cheap ones and I tried them on a hook and they sucked so by all means get a good pair. Take an old hook with you to the hardware store and try a few out. You might save a few bucks and still get a nice pair of cutters. JMO

Ben,

The KNIPEX mini bolt cutters are great. The spring loaded model is easiest to work with, in my opinion. I have both bolt cutter models and have worked with (and don't love) the side cutters.

I'm sure Knipex are great, but I don't see the need to spend that amount. I have a pair of long handled cutters, that were purchased for far less and do the job fine. I've cut multiple hooks (hard ones) in seconds with little effort. To me the test of a cutter is not how well they cut when you get the hook in deep toward the hinge, but if you can cut the hook at the tip of them and these do the job. this pair is probably 8 years old and still is in good condition.

I just want to let people know that there are other alternatives out there. If need be I can get a brand name if anyone is interested.

Wasn't the question whether the 8" knipex were worth the extra $15 over the 10" Knipex, and if they worked as well or better?

If not, then I have a pair of cutters that I forget who makes that I forgot how much they cost that I haven't compared to anything. But they have a red handle. Does that help 'ya Ben?

Go ahead and waste money then, you seem to have all the answers.

Just tryin to point out there are other options he can look at.
