Subject: Rod Power ?'s

Can someone tell me about rod powers- I see rod companys advertise different powers for different lure applications.... I've seen that you should use a XH power for XX's, I've heard that H works just as good, and I even been told that a MH power is the way to go... Help me out in figuring this rod science out...... For XX's, small bucktails, crankbaits, topwater, jerkbaits.... Any help would be great...I'm looking into a new rod.... Thanks

what baits are you looking to throw? Aside from offering different models to you, first you have to know the budget your working with and types of lures you'll use. On each rod, there should also be the lure weight range recomendation. You don't want to throw a 9oz heavy plastic bait with a rod rated for 4 ounces, unless you want to turn a one piece stick into two.

You can get top notch quality, custom rods from $130 to $500. Off the rack rods from $90 to about $350.
If your looking for one rod to cover a broad spectrum of applications, and it's your only rod, I'd go with a 7'6", MH rod rated from 1 to 4 ounces. You'll be able to throw a lot of different baits. Next rod would be an 8' heavy so you could throw everything else, except the big plastic.

St croix just put out a rod specifically for big bucktails, but I'm not sure of the model number. For dbl 10's and bigger blades, id recommend an 8'. G Loomis also has the Steel line that thorne brothers is custom building. This is what I use. Either rod will handle the baits but I think the St croix is less expensive. The Loomis steel starts at about $300.

Power ratings vary by manufacturer. You really need to ask about specific models. To simply say you need a med, mh, heavy or xh is really useless info.

As long as I'm in a kinda pissy mood about it =) let me say one more thing that chaps my butt... action describes where a rod flexes, not how much power it has. And it doesn't describe just the tip, so don't say "fast tip".

I generally like to post this little rant every year so you guys are in the clear until '09. =)

Yet, Phil, a rod can be a MH Xfast, with a Slow tip. It is all in how the blank is rolled.
For instance, the 8' Calcutta I have is rated as fast, xh. While that notation of being a fast rod is accurate, it is not comparable to where a ML rod would flex as a fast action... I digress.
You get into a lot of specific actions from the same manufacturer and you are going to tell the difference of their classification of their rods, and their actions. Furthermore, many will describe their rods as having a specific action, complemented by the action specifically of the tip. Some rods rated in a 3-5oz H Fast have a lot more tip, some have a lot less. It's all about as clear as mud until you get them in your hands.
Want to get even more out of line, let's talk 12-15WT Flyrods. It's get even more clear that it's about as clear as mud!

CMH- I have the premier 7'06"h and I love it. This rod ,at least in my opinion is as versatile as they come, handling a wide range of baits. I use it for plastics, big bucks, large cranks, larger topwaters, and sometimes jerkbaits. If your on a tight budget as I was in college, you can troll and fish suckers with it as well. Bottom line-AWESOME ROD AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. Kdawg
