Posts: 158 Location: Burlington, WI | I've got an 11 year old Motorguide Brute 56lb thrust bow mount trolling motor with a toggle switch allowing me to go from 12V to 24V. Recently, when I am using the motor all of a sudden it will just quit. The other night it would work on 12V only. Tonight it quit, and it would not work on either voltage. Is my trolling motor done for? Is it worth fixing being that old? Any ideas on what may be the problem? I've got a trip that I am leaving for in less than two weeks so I need to make some quick decisions. If I do buy a new one I was looking at the Minnkota 70lb powerdrive. Any help would be great. Also, any thoughts on that Minnkota or any others. Thanks

Posts: 5874 | If you can, get it in to Ed Schilling in West Allis(Milwaukee). He is a Minn Kota and MotorGuide Service Center, and does excellant work. I agree with Steve that it could be that Toggle Switch. You could try to take it apart, and try to get one from your local hardware store, and see if that solves the problem. But I would call Ed, to see if he has one, and maybe have him check the whole motor out while it's there. He's really good, and fair. It could also be the brushes in the motor are now gone, but that just doesn't seem to fit the symptoms as well as the switch. Does it work if you rap on the motor housing with a rubber hammer? If so, that could indicate loose or worn brushes. Here is Ed's info: Ed Schilling 2829 S 99th St West Allis, WI 53227-3322 (414) 321-9662

Posts: 386 | Hey man, I actually had a very similar problem with my Minn Kota -- it turned out to be a switch problem (a 12/24 switch), but that problem created some sort of surge that then fried the motherboard on my motor. My point is, make sure to check the switch before you hook up your next unit to make sure it doesn't fry your unit.

Posts: 158 Location: Burlington, WI | Thanks for the replies. I need a larger motor for my boat anyway. I think I am going to go with a new Powerdrive 74#. I'll see later if I can fix the old one, and then decide what to do with it.
