I have an 02 vmax 225 2 stroke, non HPDI, and have been having what I think is excessive smoke when I start the motor. The motor runs great, I just think it smokes a little more than it should. Most of the lakes I fish are no wake so most of the time it is running about 7-8 mph. I know it is a 2 stroke and there is oil being burnt but wondering if anyone had any tips for minimizing the initial smoke. Could it be a mixture problem? The motor only has about 250 hours on it. Any ideas would be great. I am going to replace the water pump next week, but don't think that should have any bearing on this situation, or am I wrong. I am using certified oil, but not Yama-lube. Could that be the problem? I'll try anything. Thanks for the help. Oh yeah, I have only noticed it this year. Thanks.

I have been running 2-stroke sleds for over 20 years and the only thing I found is try using a 100% synthetic oil. That should reduce the excessive smoke. One thing to remember on a 2-stroke, smoke is your friend(the engine is getting oil), no smoke could mean "serious problems". Good luck

Joe is right on -- I switched to synthetic this year and what a difference!

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definately give it a try. Would you recommend one brand over another? Thanks.

One questions for the guys running two-strokes with oil injection switching over from conventional oil to synthetic:

- Are you syphoning (or empyting out your oil resevoir via some other method?) out the old conventional oil prior to adding the synthetic? Or are you mixing the two and running it until you have nothing but synthetic in your oil resevoir or are you running your motor near out of oil before adding the synthetic?

I syphoned just to make sure there were no issues. Doing so does depend on the brand though -- some say specifically that it is ok to mix, others say it's not, and still others say nothing either way. I say better safe than sorry.

I have not changed yet but will more than likely syphon the old out. Can anyone suggest a brand, or is any full synthetic marine grade ok?

I spoke with someone at Yamaha this afternoon and they told me that synthetics are not recommended for use in their products. Said it probably won't hurt them but yamaha does not suggest it. FYI.

Yamalube 2-M is a semi-synthetic oil(not 100%) and is made for Yamaha 2-strokes......... I have never heard of any manufacturer saying not to use synthetic oil. If the oil meets or exceeds the manu. specs then there should be no problem.

One other thing you might want to look at. Are you keeping the motor level when you idling? If you don't they have a tendency to "Load up". I have been running a 200 Merc for years(10) and will get more smoke than normal if I don't pay attention to the trim. Another thing is, you might want to run it periodically on a lake you can run at speed to blown out any of the junk building up it the cylinders. Just a thought. Pat

That is just the Vmax, when looking to buy a a boat several years ago, check out alot of Vmax, and feedback I got was solid motor, burned more oil than Merc or Evinrudes. I just guessing it is fine

I am going to give the Amsoil a try. Is "Interceptor" the correct oil I should be using? Thanks.

Stay with the Yamaha Lube, its semi synthetic and won't foul plugs as fast as the cheeper stuff. I also have a Vmax and can say its a great motor with 400+ hrs and very relieible, and ya it smokes........ I love that smell don't you?

After my last post, I did some more research and decided to go with the factory Yama-Lube. Thanks for all the help everyone. With all of the flooding down here, might be a while before I get to test it to see if it helped, but from what I have learned, it should. Thanks again.

I've owned 2 Vmax's and I have not used anything but Yama-lube for em and every tank of gas gets some ring free additive. Engines both run like raped apes from day one and not a single problem no matter what time of year. Definitely drain oil resevoir before adding a different oil. The different oils contain additives which can coalesce and cause problems...

I will find out tomorrow as far as any differences in the smoking after the yama-lube was added. I do use the ringfree as well, and will continue to do so. I did end up draining the old oil before adding the yama-lube just to be safe. Thanks again for all the help.
