Posts: 129 Location: Glenmoore PA | Hello I just found this website and its totally amazing. I love to fish for muskies and I just started last year. What an addiction. I live down south and we have a few musky lakes in the area but the water is to warm now to fish for them down here. I have a trip planned to this place called the French River, in Canada. Just wondering if anybody has ever been up there and what sort of structure should i be looking for and what lure and color patterns i should be using for up there. I'm not looking for anybody's secret spots or anything. Any help would be appreciated. This will be my first musky trip up north so im pretty excited. Thanks ! KT

Posts: 148 Location: Milwaukee, WI | KT, I have fished that area a few times & loved it every time. There are some guys on MuskyStriker.com who live near that area who know lots more about it than I. You might try asking on that web forum too. Which portion of the river are you visiting: upper, middle or lower ? There are rapids & some dams that separate them. Unless you travel by canoe, you are restricted to one portion. Look for rock-reefs & small islands away from shore with weedbeds nearby. But, rock reefs without weeds can be good too. The problem becomes, there are rock reefs & weedbeds in open water everywhere!! Look for slack water eddys downstream from rock reefs in areas with current. If you can afford & find a guide, its worth the added expense. For casting, try bright colored spinnerbaits, suicks, & surface baits. Just about anything for musky will work there. In some sections of the river with current, muskies can be anywhere in the water column, surface to bottom, because there is ample oxygen content everywhere. The river has many deep sections, some are over 100 feet. Every section of the French River has many thousands of acres of good structure. You can't fish even half of one section in one trip. Try trolling near the reefs with large crankbaits like 10 inch Jakes to cover water. There is not a high population of musky there. But, it has some monsters. Some of the largest muskies of all time have been caught there. Good luck, drive carefully & have fun. Edited by snaggletooth 7/14/2008 12:42 PM

Posts: 342 Location: Passaic, NJ - Upper French River, ON | Black Wades Wobbler or Sledge, Rumbler, Big Game crankbait in perch or walleye. White w/red on overcast days. After a front, ususally dead for 2 days. Before a front, get to the prime spots. Weather changes quickly, so check the am radio weather broadasts. Read up on the history and the geology of the French and you'll realize even more what a special place it is. You can get a Canadian Hydro map of the area here: http://www.mdnautical.com/chs_georgianbay_northchannel_lakehuron.ht... Good Luck !

Posts: 148 Location: Milwaukee, WI | Also, if you have time, visit the French River museum just off of Hwy 69 by the French River bridge. Entrance is about 1/8 mile south of the bridge. Its tucked away from the road & easy to miss if you're not watching. Thats a great place to learn about the history of the region. Also, save some space in your truck for a souveiner rock from that area. The rocks around there are very colorful & make great garden pieces. Easy to find lots of colorful rocks.
