Posts: 279 | I think my anti reverse bearings went out on one of my reels. I've got the drag as tight as I can get it and the line will pull out pretty easy and the reel handle turns backwards a little bit at a time???

Posts: 1297 Location: WI | Diawa Luna? One of mine did that when a 39" hit on the figure 8. Another one failed while I was netting a fish.

| Take it apart and remove the bearing. Then clean it real good with solvent. I just use carb cleaner. Clean and dry it well with a cloth. Put a little WD40 on it and put it back together. You should be good to go. If the problem comes back your going to have to get a new bearing. | |||

Posts: 279 | Yeah it is a diawa. I took it apart and cleaned it all out really well and it still did it. I thought it might have something to do with the drag so i added a extra washer and it helped a little but not good enough if the big one hits. Thanks for the help I will order a new anti reverse bearing .

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | If you over greased or oiled the bearing that will cause it to slip like you mentioned. Lightly wipe it out with a cleaner/solvent to remove excess lube but make sure you do it gently. It will take a few times doing this before it will start to show improvements. If nothing changes then the bearing may be shot.

Posts: 279 | I guess I failed to mention that it happened last fall when I caught a pike throwing a bucktail. I as trying to reel the small fish in and I would turn the handle and nothing would happen, the handle would just spin around without making the spool pick up line. So I would lift the rod and then reel in and slowly caught up to the fish took the reel off and never used the rest of the year. Went to clean it and see if I could figure it out and it is still acting like described in my previous posts. Thanks for all the help.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | First off, if your handle is spinning backwards your roller clutch (anti reverse) is shot or needs grease. Second, if your reel is engaged and won't pick up line OR your drag is cranked down and you can still peel off line you need to wind your line on tighter or use backing.

Posts: 444 Location: Duluth, MN | You can order that bearing from St. Croix for $10. The bearing in the Luna is the same as the AC300 from St. Croix. Maybe Daiwa sells them cheaper...let me know if you call them. If you put on heavy use...i replace it every winter when i clean my reels...if just moderate use then every other year should be good. IMO they are the best reels you can buy and are worth the cost of a bearing replacement. My oldest is going on it's 5th year of heavy use and still going strong.

Posts: 156 | Am I thinking about this wrong? I thought the anti-reverse simply stops the reel handle from spinning backwards. If you are actually reeling and it is not picking up line wouldn't that be the drag not holding? In other words if your hand is stopping the handle from going backwards the AR bearing is not "in play" at that point? Just asking b/c I am certainly no expert in this area - more like just thinking out loud. ETA: Looks like Flambeauski beat me to it. Edited by Makintrax73 2/17/2010 3:19 PM

Posts: 279 | The line was on tight and there was backing on the reel. When I tighten the drag down and pull the line the drag gives decent resistance but then the handle will slowly turn the wrong way, it doesn't just spin wildly backwards(moves just a little bit at a time)I will look at it tomorrow and hold the reel handle and see what happens.

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Luna's anit reverse just may be one of the worst ones on the market. I have blown the anti reverse on a few of these reels in ONE day of use. If you are doing any ripping, twitching or jerking I would highly suggest using another reel.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | "I as trying to reel the small fish in and I would turn the handle and nothing would happen, the handle would just spin around without making the spool pick up line." That's a seperate issue from the roller clutch, which sounds like it needs grease or repair. If the spool is engaged and it won't pick up line AND the levelwind is NOT working the line isn't tight to the spool. 300's should need a new roller clutch after 150-200 hours of use. If they go out sooner then A: they weren't packed with grease when they left the factory, B: it was heavily used in frigid weather, or C: it was engaged while hurling a pounder through the air. Posts: 279 | I looked at the reel a little more this morning and the handle turns backwards a little. But the thing I noticed was the spool is what spins towards the front of the reel causing the drag to ease up. I guess I'll just order a few parts and see if it fixes the problem. Thanks All.

I agree, and am glad this was left up here, as perhaps Daiwa will take heed or make an add on that will prolong uptime of these reels for ripping and twitching. Their bread and butter in the U..is with Walleye and Bass sector no doubt, so we probably don't quite show up on the radar, which is understandable. they are such a nice smooth working reel, save for that bearing. Funny thing is, I have an old Dawa CVX millionaire that is on its second anti reverse bearing in 7 years. Granted, it is a backup reel, but there is alot of hours on that one, and it lasted alot longer than my more expensive models. I have not had the two bearings out side by side, but there must have been something a bit different with the original AR bearing in the ole cvx.
