I know there are a bunch of you guys out threre that are fishing from kayaks for musky I want to join your ranks but I am a bit apprehensive. Anyone ever get thier kayak flipped when a fish made a run? I have rolled mine once (with my 2 year old in my lap) and now I am afraid of the same happening again. Any tips on how to outfit the kayak so that everything is secure but easily accessible? Thanks!

Strap it to a 20+ foot Lund or Ranger.

If you find a muskie that can flip a kayak with a grown man sitting in it, start fishing with a .308

kayaks are a poor mans float...i have two. i strap my yak to a ford escort and get 30+ mpg going up the mountain. with $4.00/gallon gas climbing to $5.00/gallon...i'll stick with the yaks

stability isn't a real issue for most recreational yaks. the liquid logic manta ray 12 i fish from is an extremely stabile yak. i've rolled mine twice in the last 3 years because i hung up on low water ledges when running chutes. the key to running rivers in a yak is to find the most water in the chute and paddle like @#!%. the quickest way to go from being a kayaker to being a swimmer is to quit paddling in rapids.

when i say rapids, i mean whitewater. i oftentimes float backwards in fast ripples so i can hit the stillwater pools and current seams with soft jerkbaits and jig-n-pigs. the more you float, the more comfortable you'll become. experience is key.

don't try to overload the boat with gear. i carry 4 rods with me when i fish. they're held down with a berkley rod holder screwed to the bow, and two eye bolts between my legs with a short bungee stretched over the front of the reels. i carry one tackle box that is attatched to the footwell with a u bolt and carabiners.

i carry only one muskie rod and two types of muskie baits(6" swimbait and bucktails). the other 3 rods are smallie specific.

here's my boat and my system

i suggest a sit on top kayak. wilderness systems tarpons, heritage redfish, and liquid logic manta ray 12 all have a following. for rivers the hobies with the footpaddled system looks like a good way to break off expensive gear. i don't like anything dangling down in skinny, bony waters.

i have to run down south, and won't be back for a few days, but if there is anything i can help you with, feel free to ask.

i'd also suggest riversmallies.com. there is a non-powered watercraft forum there with some very knowledgable river anglers there, but i'd suggest you do a search in the archives before you ask a question unless a browbeating doesn't bother you. some of those guys can be a bit harsh at times.

In the latest issue of Esox Angler Joe Bednar wrote about kayaking for Northerns and sometime last summer in Musky Hunter there was an article about Musky-ing (sure it's a word...why not?) out of a kayak. Check 'em both out - it's good info.

Does anyone have any thoughts on using a rudder vs. not using one..... I don't have one the kits are terribly expensive and I was trying to contrive a way of making one I was thinking of cutting up an old paddle and rigging up a system from there. Any thoughts?
