Posts: 291 Location: New Jersey | Hey Gang, I will be heading up to sabaskong bay Aug 23-30 for a week of musky hunting. It probably varies year to year, but should i be expecting a pretty good algae bloom at the time of year? If so, do you guys fish right in the pea soup or try and find some clearer water?? Thanks, Rob

Location: Athens, Ohio | You can do either, the fish don't mind. One time, I was making a fig. 8 in the soup and ended up striking the fish up side of the head with my rod tip, so be careful. Navigate into the wind and you can find clearer water. m

Posts: 93 Location: Minneapolis, MN | We were up there last year (a week earlier) in August... there was no (or very little) bloom in the Nestor Falls area. Going west, we found a wall of pea soup past Split Rock Narrows. Good luck! Edited by stinger 6/4/2008 8:19 AM

Posts: 216 Location: Belleville, WI | Our group has fished the Nestor Falls area the last 2 years, beginning the week around 8-18. The first year, there was a very slight bloom, which wasn't a factor. Last year, the entire week was bloom-free, until the very last day, when a major bloom occurred seemingly in about an hour's time. We caught 3 fish right in the bloom . . . but that was our last day of fishing for the week.

Posts: 2089 | Current in the Nestor Falls area can take care of some of the bloom. "East" is Paradise and don't forget the "slop" fish. Big slop fish. Steve

Posts: 2024 | I'll have to agree with Steve here. Seems like the "clearest" water (still tanin stained though) is in the Nestor Falls area. However, it can be a bit of a run if you're out of Morson. There are still plenty of places that should be free of bloom. Check the wind and fish the wind-blown areas. Lee sides of structure tend, in my experience, to hold more algae. Good time of year up there! Think rocks (but as Steve pointed out, don't be afraid to hit the weedbeds)!

Posts: 294 Location: Bloomer, Wi | Last year in early august almost all of our fish came from very deep into the slop. Raddog spinnerbaits were the ticket even though they had to be cleaned of weeds almost every cast.

Posts: 291 Location: Madison, WI | I'll add my vote for the slop as well. Back bays with a 5-6 foot channel running in the middle. Dont be afraid to fish the lily pads, throw a jackpot in the pockets.....I have found that fish will stack in them and every 50-100 ft, there will be a new fish taking up residence. Ive moved fish off a specific clump of lily pads (surrounded by more lily pads), come back 2 days later and that fish is still in that same exact clump.... We have found this pattern best during the bloom. Edited by PredLuR 6/5/2008 7:03 AM

Last year I was up there a bit later than August, and Burrows Bay had the cleanest water in that area. It was nice to not have to travel too far. Some mid 40-inch fish were caught, and one tanker was seen. I used a red Double Cowgirl and fished in the back of a boat with three guys in it and I had twice as many follows as the other guys. Good luck.
