First off, does or has anyone used this reel? I have had one for some time and am getting it re-furbed right now, but am not too familiar with it. Abu sent me some vauge info on how to use the auto shift features, but I am wondering if anyone can shed any more light on this reel.
Secondly one of the few things I do know about this reel is that it has variable gear ratio or "Auto Shift" that can be put to either 6.8:1 or 3.8:1 gear ratio. Which ratio should be used for which baits. I see everyone typically uses a 4.1:1 for dbl 10's, but what do you guys think? I can't really afford a new reel right now and want to utilize this reel for the time being and any suggestions would be great.
Thanks in adavance for any help.

So it looks like no one has used this reel. Here is what I know about this reel. Maybe someone can help me with what gear ratios to use.
Apparently if you turn the dial to all the way clockwise it will be at a 6.8:1 gear ratio. As you retrieve your bait and when a fish strikes it will autmatically adjust to a lower ratio based on lure and fish hook up. Make any sense? On the other hand if you turn the dial all the way counterclockwise it will stay at the lowest gear ratio which is the 3.8:1.
Again if anyone has any moe info on this it would be a great help. Or point me in the direction of someone who can help.
Thanks guys.

I have never seen this model of reel--but I have several 6500s. They are fine reels.

The gear ratios that you described seem fine to me, and make sense. Obviously the lower ratio gives a slower but more powerful retrieve, while the larger ratio (6.8:1) would give a much faster retrieve, and would allow you to burn in a bucktail for example. And the fact that the reel automatically drops to the lowest ratio when fighting a fish is pretty neat as well...

If you haven't done this already, I would suggest that you call Chuck at Sportman's in Mosinee Wisconsin. The man is a walking encyclopedia on all things reel, and will take the time to talk to you about it.

Here's their site: http://www.sportsmansrepair.com/

Chuck is actually re-furning this reel as we speak. I was thinking about calling him to see if he could help. Thanks for the reply.

Do a search on this site and your questions will be answered. I purchased one of these reels last year at a rummage sale and put the same question out and received and answer. I think I posted it in the tackle and equipment under 6500 C-3 2 speed. Hope this helps.

Sorry, I should have checked there first. It did help a bunch. Thanks muskyhunter. It seems that I should just keep it dialed in at the 3.8:1 ratio for most of the baits unless I want to burn smaller stuff.
