| I know this is for basement builders and not lure companies but I need some help with lure pricing. I build them in a basement a few here and there and a local bait shop wants to carry a few at a time. What is the typical markup for a dealer? Lets say the lure costs me about $6 to produce when it's all said and done. They could probably sell them for $25. How does the whole wholesaling game work? Do they need a return of 20, 30, 40 or 50 percent? I can't see selling someone a lure for $15 so they can get 40%. I sweat it out to make it and it would be tough to let it go so cheap.
Any help would......help.
Thanks |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I charge what my free time is worth. I don't really need the money, but I like it when people catch fish on my baits. Would I cry if I never made another one? Probably not, Id just fish more |

| Dealers are going to want to make 30-40% most of the time with them much prefering to make 40%+ on baits. Don't forget to figure in your FET also! |

| Hey Chris, I know exactly where your coming from. I have had some places ask for 40% plus $25 a month. Needless to say they aren't handling any of my baits. I have one bait that I have about $6.00 in materials and 3 hours of labor to boot. I've sold some from $25-$30 on my own but its touch and go. One day will be good and then when you think you will do good, you don't. As far as the bait shops go, they have their expences also. It hurts to let a bait go but what if they don't sell it for sometime or not at all. Just something to think about. I really enjoy this or I wouldn't keep doing it. Surely its not for the money. Good Luck. Ken |

Location: st clair shores, MI | They definatly want to get 30 to 40 percent. I dont mass produce them so its not really worth it to me. What i do is set up a stand at our local club meetings and sell and trade with the members and other bait makers, and i just about sell out every year at one meeting and then after opening weekend i get swarmed with calls for certain colors and speacil orders that i fill at my convience. One thing i really enjoy is getting to talk to the guys that buy them and getting feedback first hand. |
