Location: Hugo, MN | Most use .051. I use .062 on my double 10's, but it's not necessary. It just stays straight longer. Mepps uses something thinner than .051, and they work fine. The tensile strength of even the .030 that many leaders are made of is around #174. Really just depends on the weight of the blades and components, the overall length of the bait, and how much flex you care to have. I like a rigid bucktail that I don't have to straighten out after every snake northern I catch. Beware that if you go .062 sometimes you have to use a little bigger components to get the larger diameter holes in the beads, etc. That's going to add weight. As far as bending, it depends what you are using to bend it. Some of the tackle making benders don't do anything over the .051, so you'll have to bend it by hand with a round nose pliers. .051 is easy to bend, .062 is not...but I like it still. If I was making them for a living, I wouldn't waste my time with the.062, and would use .051 exclusively. |

Location: Land of the Musky | .062" for my Double #10 DOMINATRIX bucktails
.062" for my Double #13 BOOTY TAILS bucktails
.051" is good too. I just like building my lures as "tank" like as I can. Go tough or go home when making muskie lures |

| Go big or go home. .062 for me. It's possible the you may get more vibration out of .051 wire, but I will sacrifice the little added vibration for durability. |

| to my way of thinking there's a difference in what i'm looking for in a d-10 bucktail if i'm buying vs building it myself.
if i'm buying them i want .062 so it doesn't get bent up as easily.
however, when building my own i'd rather use .051 wire; it's easier to work with when bending the ends.
if a lure gets bent up from a fish or casting or whatnot, i can just re-shaft it with new wire...keep a couple pieces and some pliers in the boat and it's less than 2 minutes to repair a bait if you need to do so.
