Are these baits solid plastic? Can I cut an inch or 2 off of 1 and add a rubber tail?

Thanks
Jason

The hellhound is solid and I believe the doubled and tripple are made the same way.

A few years ago at the sport shows, they were selling squirly triple Ds. They ran out and started making some out of the DDDs that they had. Never got one so no idea how well they worked.

Jason - you can cut them down. A couple years ago at the Milwaukee show I watched Keith Eldrup customize a few triple d's. (OK I actually talked him into selling me one). Pretty sure he placed a bit of weight in the tail before attaching the tail.

Do you know how much tail he cut off and how much weight he added? Where would you add the weight? Would you drill into the flat surface you just created and then pour lead in there?
Thanks for your help,
Krishna

I wanted to bring this topic back up and see if anyone had a good way of making DDD into squirrly (sp?) Ds. Any suggestions would be great!

Personally, I would just take off the tail treble, thread on the grub of your choice, and replace the treble. You'll get the same result without chopping a bait in half and possibly ruining it altogether.

Does the tail treble sink then? I am thinking on the long pauses it will hang down instead of sticking straight out like it would it it was attached to the bait. I had thought about trying that (actually I am going to try it tomorrow), but was worried it wouldnt add much when the bait is paused for more than a split second.

P.S. Baldy, are the squirrly (sp?) wabulls and weagles available yet?

It wont stick straight out like when attached to the body, but it should still waggle it in their face on a pause.

You could push the grub up the hook shank against the body and superglue it in place. I chopped an glued a DDD with various tails and they all killed the slash. JLong is probably laughing right now since I messed up a perfectly designed tool...

there you go. Good idea from Will.

You are going to want a fairly thin tail or, like Will says, you will kill the slash

Yes. They are solid plastic and you can modify them basically anyway you want. We did sell a limited batch of squirrellys at a few shows a couple years back. Basically chop off the back end of the bait and glue on a twister tail. I think we did drill into the body cavity a bit and added some weight to compensate for the loss of hook weight on the back end. The bait needs to be balanced relatively the same for it to still dance. Personally, I did not like them too much. The tail does deaden the action. Others loved em though....

I tried it with both the grub pushed to the body and part of a grub on the back treble last weekend and I was not impressed. I think I like the DDD the way it is.
