With all the new virus & the VHS problems. I'm finding it very difficult to find suckers.

Can I expect this going into the fall?

I love to use QS rigs as a compliment to casting in the spring & fall where legal, but from what I hear there are new regulations that prohibit the sale of muskie size suckers. Last year we could use them provided we purchased them in the same state we were going to use them. Bringing suckers in from ILL & using them in Wisconsin is a big no no & I will not break the laws.

I can still catch these fish on lures, but will miss the cliking noise of the reel going off if this is what it takes to control the virus problems our fisheries are having.

Where can I find more information on the rules & regs on sucker fishing & how to identify a virus if I see it on any species? I still take the kids fishing for smallies & pan fish & would expect to see something since the DNR is making changes to curb this problem....

Thanks,
Mike

one of the things weve always heard over the years is that Minnesota dosent have very good suckers for sale in the bait shops mostly on the small size so people bring the large ones in from outstate,,,People should know that if you do that now and get caught they can or maybe its mandatory?? that they sieze your vehicle its a violation of state and federal law,,not worth the risk

Now, how will the Minnesota DNR know they are not Minnesota suckers?

Are Minnesota suckers Purple and Gold?

Maybe the Minnesota suckers like boat rides?

Maybe Minnesota suckers actually like fisherman...aka "Hookers"?

HHHMMMMM....I wonder. LOL Sorry Minnesota guys, it had to be done.

If you google Wisconsin VHS rules you will find the DNR link to get to the detailed rules.

I checked in at Dorns yesterday & they are the ones who told me that it was going to be a problem because of the VHS deal... They had 8"ers, but thats a minnow in my book.

Dorns went on to say that this was going to continue through the Fall & it would definatly effect the availability..

I guess it's a wait & see deal?

I figured with all the great muskie minds & expert anglers that visit the worlds best muskie web site, someone would know if regulations have been updated to curb the sale of musike grade suckers & what to look for this year in regards to the virus problems as mentioned above...

With a new cabin up North & plans to spend a great deal of time up there fishing with family, I would like to photo & report to the DNR evidence of potential virus problems if I recognize it.

Going to try google next..

actually the next step disscussed is in the future making people have a reciet with them from the bait shop they purchased them from,,,,

also they may get a little suspect if you transport them over 12 inches since its against the law to sell them bigger then that in MN, Described on page 3 of the regulations of description of minnows

HH,

No wonder not many people use suckers in MN; at least that is the perception. If WI had those kinds of regs, I don't think many people would use suckers either; even though some of the best action (even on bigger fish, for WI anyway) can be with 10" to 12" suckers.

Here we go again with the description of a minnow and that you can't use a sucker over 12". I have to hand to happy his misinformation campaign on this issue knows no bounds. It is pefectly legal to use suckers over 12" long in MN. This issue has been discussed ad naseum!

Unless the 2008 regs are vastly diffrent this discussion should put the sucker haters in a box.

Bold is copied directly from the regs.

Suckers over 12" are considered rough fish...

Rough fish are defined as carp, buffalo, sucker, redhorse, freshwater drum (sheepshead), bowfin (dogfish), burbot (eelpout), cisco (tullibee), gar, mooneye, and bullhead.

Bait shops can legally sell suckers over 12"...

All rough fish, except cisco (tullibee), may be bought and sold.

It looks like they added minnow to this reg this year.  Calling them bait minnows basically hammerlocks you into using only minnows as bait.  That would mean only suckers under 12".  This is different from last year, as it did not include minnows...meaning rough fish (suckers over 12") were legal bait and could be transported.

Except while on the body of water where taken, live fish may not be
transported in a quantity of water sufficient to keep them alive unless the
fish are bait minnows or the person is authorized to do so by the DNR.

The DNR really needs to do a better on defining regulations like this.

I'll be using my 13-18" suckers this fall on the metro lakes. Nobody ever checks me out there.

He can use them if he catches them first on the metro lake. I love how everyone reads into others responses!
