Don S, do you use any type of black box to regulate voltage to the down rigger? Salmon, Lake Trout fisherman use it to correct downrigger cable voltages. It creates a positive field around the boat that can be helpful in attracting fish. A voltage reading to high or to low may repell fish. I know Great Lake fisherman use the Black box when trolling with downriggers. Could it be why the muskies don't hit some of your baits? I'm wondering myself as I set up my unit to record. I caught a 52" fish that was similar in shape as your video fish, very wide on the back all the way to the back fin . Mine didn"t look as long in the water as it was because of the wide back. Your video fish could be even longer than it looks.

This is a great question, I have talked to some guys who swear by the voltage regulation with the black box for salmon. I fished with a guy from Egg harbor who uses one as well. However I have not used one yet. I will most likely try one this year. It would amaze me if they would go on other baits with the box, sure worth a try. Did you see my post on using the Sonar and GPS for setting up routes? If not I am posting it here again, be safe!! let me know when you get your first fish on film, what a blast !! I also attached a safety sheet that I typed up for a couple friends duplicating what I did.( bottom of page)

previous post!

I just wanted to make a post and explain how important it is to learn your routes with your GPS and sonar.

Clip 1: I found this shoreline with points/ fingers sprawling off with a variety of depths. I marked a route and dove in, I got through but you can see what could have taken place. This takes some practice but even then be careful ! This is very effective but be careful.

Clip 2: I have done this many times on many lakes, you see the weeds on the graph deeper than the eye can see. You can take the ball and camera and cruise over the top and check them out, maybe you will hit the cabbage honey hole. ( oh well not this time) This was at dark with a low battery but you can see what I am talking about.

Hope to see some new and educational footage this year.

Pictures like this are pretty impressive, but I don't know if I could handle watching big fish swim up to your lure, snub it off and swim away. It could probably be a good learning tool on perhaps what your doing wrong in not triggering the fish.

Triggering fish:
Cranking the bait up at the same time you speed up seemed to get them excited as well. Again this year will tell us more.

You make a good point on triggering strikes. However when you consider the number of strikes you get casting versus follows, I have not calculated the difference. It will be interesting to see what happens this year with the number of guys trolling with cameras.

I just edited this after your post. Again great point.

Cool! Like I said if all they did was look I would probably just sit in the boat and sulk. While casting though, I guess, I feel more in control of the situation when the Fish is only a few feet away with me looking down on her.

Yes, I did that a couple times ! LOL
But you did make a great point, triggering strikes is real important, even with the camera.

I assume your fishing some what deeper using this technique, what about making a change in boat direction as a trigger?

Hi:
I somewhat tried mastering direction changes, speed changes, and then I took them into the rocks and banged bottom. If you look at the photos you will notice one that the bait and the muskies head are below the camera. This is because of my speed along with direction changes. If you look at the U-tube clip (above) you will see how I take baits into rocks, but this takes a little practice to avoid damaging your equipment.

You make another good point.

Hey Don, I do a fair amount of trolling myself here on my home lake. Most of my trolling is for walleye, pulling cranks. I know speed and direction changes can be difficult and costly especially when using multiple lines. I usually do my best though when I am banging bottom.

My brother and I leave our trolling motor down when we troll and turn it on high ocasionally to change speeds. You can also turn it sideways to make fast changes in direction. We triggered 4 muskies this way last year.

Sheesh Don! In that first video clip the "working structure" looked more like...

"crushing rock"!

Ouch!
