I am very hesitant to ask this question, as I know how secretive musky fishermen are, but I am trying to do some research for a potential article. I did some polls earlier in the year and that got me started but I need more specific information if you’re willing to give it.

So if you’re willing could you please tell me which lake and what year you got your Wisconsin 50” fish. If you have more than one GREAT I need all the data I can get on Wisconsin 50” fish.

If you don’t feel comfortable posting them here please feel free to email or private message me the info. There will be no specific lake names mentioned in the article unless it’s a big known lake.

Lake X or lake diversions do not help me here, I need actually Lake and Year for the data to be useful.

Also if there is no way in heck you are going to tell me that is fine also. Thanks much!

Steve made me think of something below, it doesn't have to be you if you had a client or friend catch it great.

Look's like the fishing was pretty darn good back in the 80's.

Wow Steve,

I guess dynamite and a net is really the way to go. That is very impressive list Steve. Jeff I believe the list just went from skewed to absolutely worthless.

Not at all. I think for every one I caught, there was one caught from North Twin, Boom, or one of the other waters then known for 50" class fish. I was guiding just about full time, and keyed on water that had low density and big fish, and no or very few other guides. I literally was on the water almost all summer and fall. Jim Cairnes was a regular boat partner, and that didn't hurt. A big fish then was 'over 48', and 50" wasn't really that much better back then, everyone went by weight.

Thanks for the responses, emails and private messages.

For what I am looking for the data shouldn’t get skewed, by some crazey guy or guys that spend every waking hour on specific lakes. I am not looking for the best lake for a 50 as my previous polls indicated. I am trying to figure out some factors that help Wisconsin Waters produce 50 inchers. Knowing what lakes and what years should help me put some data to work. MAYBE!

Not to get anything startedbut Iwas wondering if all fish were released? Since the norm back then was to keep'em. I know of one 50" that was caught on Lake Tom in 8/06. Wasn't by me tho.

Nope. And not all were harvested, either. Different time, different ethic, but by the early 80's CPR was beginning to catch on. One night I was fishing with my son and caught 2 that were both 48" class. I released them both, after registering them, and remember the locals saying I was 'crazy'.

We've got Musky Lakes but they're Top Secret . . . Great Walleye fishing but who really cares about that. I go to IA and MN for Musky but thanks for pointing out my state sucks when it comes to the Muskellunge.

, 2002.

Just curious, does this have to do with the idea of larger than usual stocking events producing better results than continuous stocking levels?

In a nut shell yes tfootstalker, though there are lots of variables. But hopefully this will help shed more light on the topic, one way or another.

I only got ", 2002" did something get cut off.

Again thanks everyone keep them coming! Have almost 30 fish now and around 15 lakes.

I think there is definitely some merit to that theory. Let us know when it's finished.

Hey guys just wanted to thank everyone for all the info, hopefully I can try and make some sense of these numbers, and figure out at least one variable to the question WHY!

For a break down of the info I received so far.

22 people submitted 48 50+” fish, from 26 lakes.

13 50+” fish were caught before 1985.

30 50+” fish were caught after 2000.

On the previous Muskiefirst polls the top 9 inland lakes for a Wisconsin 50+” fish were ranked in the following order.

Wisconsin River
Lac Du Flambeau Chain
Chippewa Flowage
North/South Twin Lake
Ockauchee Lake
Flambeau Flowage
Pewaukee Lake
Tomahawk Lake
Pelican Lake

Based on the fish submitted because of this topic the same lakes rank in the following order:

Pelican Lake 12 fish (one after 2000, 9 from Steve Worall before 1985)
Wisconsin River 6 fish (all after 2000)
Tomahawk Lake 4 fish (all after 2000)
Pewaukee Lake 2 fish (one after 2000)
Chippewa Flowage 1 fish (after 2000)
Flambeau Flowage 1 fish (after 2000)
Lac Du Flambeau Chain, North/South Twin, Ockauchee, 0 fish.

The above info doesn’t mean much for what I am trying to do, but since those lakes were all listed previously on this site I figured some might be interested in the numbers.

I don’t plan to name any lake names that are not MAJOR musky fisheries, that everyone knows about. But I do have some info I can now do some checking on.

Thank you everyone who helped contribute to the list, and please if there are more 50+ inch Wi fish out there keep sending them to me.

Thanks
Nail A Pig!
Mike

I know a couple 50 inch fish per year are reported out of Pelican almost every year; is there anywhere those fish are 'registered' if released now?.

Can't remember the exact years, but from 1980 to 2001. All on the Manitowish
Chain where I guided full time. 3 on Rest Lake, 5 on Manitowish Lake, 1 on Alder
Lake, 2 on Island Lake, 1 on Wild Rice Lake and 1 on Spider Lake. These are the
ones I remeber for sure. I kept one 52 incher and released the rest. I also clipped
the dorsal fin with a scissors on the released and caught 2 of them twice.
