Location: SW Michigan | About half the cranks I make I use aluminum lips (got lots of material) and the other half are lexan and glue them with Devcon 2 ton. Do you guys use the same glueing process for both materials? With the Lexan I've just been roughing up the glueing surface to make for a good bond. That's it. I do the same with aluminum, but worry (too much?) about the bond, so I've been pinning them with a piece of stainless rod. No big deal, but it takes extra time to pin & glue & touch up the paint where I pinned etc.. and I'm not really sure it's even necessary. What do you think? Am I being too cautious? |

| I add my lips (aluminium and Lexan ) before I prime and paint, with 2 part Lepage marine epoxy. It has a set time of about an hour. It's not necessary to pin it with a rod. I too was concerned when I started using this glue. The aluminium lip withstood a whole season of pounding rocky bottoms and shows no sign of fatigue.
From my experience, I would not recommend using the quick set 5 minute epoxies as they are too brittle.

Location: Land of the Musky | I use 3 1 inch heavy duty screws along with 2 ton epoxy on the screws and bottom of my metal lips on my Grunts. Overkill X10 but why not! Cost a few cents extra to make your lures real tough. You will be glad you did at the end of the day. Good rule of thumb for me is, can I make this lure so my son can pass it down to his son someday? That is how I make my hand made lures...

Location: SW Michigan | Thanks for the advice & input. It's probably not necessary but if I want to go that extra mile, why not? S54 kind of touched on the reason I was questioning my process. Because usually I like to paint before glueing up the lip. So many decisions....
