Posts: 639 Location: Hudson, WI | I picked up of couple Mayhem Stick Em' jigs last year and I don't even think they got wet. I have no confidence in them, probably because I have no idea how to really work them and when to apply them. I suppose, yes, just like a bass jig. And also, spring and fall would seem like the best time. When do jigs come out of your box? Also, anyone do well throwing jigs and creatures off of the deeper breaks in the summer?

Posts: 1536 Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | I have one or two options rigged up at all times. I like to have a wider head rigged for the rocks and a narrower weedless style for the vegetation. I throw em all season long.

Posts: 814 | What would be a good rod reel set-up I would like to keep cost to a minimum if possible as this will be my first jig setup, and don't really know if I'll stick with it or not. Please list rod and reel model if possible thanks

Posts: 639 Location: Hudson, WI | Thanks, Gentlemen. Steve, nice article, sir. I think I remember you saying something about jigs on Deer Lake in a thread last year. Backing out and fishing creatures off the secondary break. Always nice to have another weapon in your arsenal.

Posts: 238 | I fish jigs from start to finish and always have one rigged up at all times,i catch fish on them from deep to shallow and everywhere in between, one of my go to,never leave home without baits.I have hade much better succes tipping the jig with a swim shad or reaper than a twister tail, not sure why that is.I ussually swim it witha steady lift fall retrieve but have also had great succsess really burning a jig and swim shad super fast, you can really smoke this bait as it offers little to no resistance.I deeper water i count it down to the desired depth and swim it with the lift and fall method. Also i have caught fish in or on the edge of heavy slop flipping the jig and reaper on short line just as you would do for bass. This can get real hairy fast with a big fish on short line in the heavy stuff.Once you become confident in the jig you will be throwing it all the time.As for tackle i throw my jigs on a standard 7-6 med heavy muskie bucktail rod. Posts: 32890 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Listen to what One (muskyone) says about jigs, too. He's one of the best. I am now using a prototype Okuma spinning rod and a high speed spinning reel. 17# mono and a 60# sevenstrand leader top off the rig. Takes a couple minutes to whip about any muskie out there.

Posts: 3869 | I tried spinning gear (heavy action Falcon rod and a very nice Shimano steelhead reel with 20# mono.) But I went back to a custom baitcaster rod (like a heavy action bass flipping rod) and a cute Abu 4500 with 30# Power pro. I though the spinning outfit would be better, but just didn't feel right. I agree that Mike (MuskyOne) is a master jig dude. (So is Worrall.) 5 years ago on Bone Lake: "Hey, what the heck ARE you using over there, Mike?" He tossed that jig right into my lap from 25 yards or so. "Use any color as long as its black." If you have an opportunity, try to read up on Gene Curtis and his Curtis Creatures. That old dude can sure catch fish on jigs. That is a good article, Steve. Edited by Ranger 4/24/2008 5:56 AM

Posts: 639 Location: Hudson, WI | Mike, you fish all of the lakes I fish on a regular basis. It was probably you I saw throwin jigs and black lizards in the northwest bay of Bone last fall. I thought about busting one out, then went back to the old reliable Cowgirl and only caught one dink and carpaltunnel.
