Glass is going to be your best bet for fishing cold weather. Graphite will work fine if you hold your rod while trolling, but putting one in a rod holder, especially a non flexing metal type, is asking for trouble eventually. I personally hold my graphite rods during the summer, and only use a holder in the fall when I'm strictly trolling. That's when the Ugly Sticks come out.
