I was given a couple of old 10" straight believers. The finish on these are in pretty bad shape. Need advice on how to prep them for re-painting. Do I just clean them well or do I need to strip the old paint off and fine sand them first. Do I need to use a primer or do I just go ahead and paint straght ahead with my color pattern. Last question is do I use some type of top coat to seal/protect the finish. This will be my first painting project so I appreciate any info or links that could help. Also need a recommendation on brand/type of paint for use with the airbrush.

You can probably get away with just scuffing the surface with 400 grit sandpaper then a basecoat of white followed by your paint pattern, the topcoat with devcon 2 ton or envirotex, or the hundred other top coats. Not sure , but tackle underground might have some good stuff on this if all your questions are not answered.

Guest LOL, I get it. I want to start making my own baits and i was given these beat up believers as a place to start. I need to learn how to paint with an air brush. I have an old air brush and am getting ready to place an order for a set of createx starter paints and DVD. Just looking for suggestions on how to prep the surface to prevent mistakes.

I know that the sealer that i use on wooden baits bonds/fuses with Belivers since i´ve repainted afew myself .Sand with 120/220 grit sandpaper ,dip 2-4 times in sealer ,paint & topcoat with your preferred topcoat .If your interested just shot me a pm
