This could be a stupid topic, but what are shad thinking when follow your bait??? Now I know everyone has at one time had shad follow your bait back to the boat, but when I was out Friday I was throwing a Sq. Phantom and shad would just about mate with it,running right under the bait, even during a figure 8. They wouldnt go away.So is this a good thing or bad?? Are they just curious or think there running with the "team"??

Shad will school around your bait and try to make a move. The lures, like hot chicks, tend to be unresponsive

I doubt they have the capacity to "think" very much. Whatver neurons are firing up there are probably instinctively responding to the movement of the lure.

But if we must fall victim to anthropomorphism, I'd say it's probably along the lines of:

"Woo, she's hot. Man, I'd like to... Hey can I buy 'ya a drink?"

Perch do the same thing, even tiny ones. I've often wondered if a fish that swirled behind my bait was actually eating perch that were following.

Safety in numbers, maybe? I'd think if they start following your bait like crazy that would be a time to "un-match the hatch."

The shad in the lake you are fishing on are spawning then. The only time I get shad follows are during their spawn, and it happens every year. Sometimes there will be up to ten of them following the lure at the same time, and it appears they are trying to mate with the lure. They are broadcast spawners and I think they think your bait is sexy! Not that they actually think!
