Location: Green Bay, WI | I have done it from time to time, but never caught anything. It works really well to get the twists out of your line, providing you are using a ball-bearing swivel! I have a friend that used to row-troll creepers and hawg-wobblers at night in a very clear northern WI lake. He tells me it worked quite well, and that he caught several fish this way. I have always wanted to try it, but it's one of those things that a person never seems to get around to doing... Last fall on Green Bay I saw a guy trolling a bucktail very similar to a muskyhawk, just bulging the surface and occasionally breaking it. I saw him get a hit, but he never got hooks into the fish. But I'd say that it must work or the guy wouldn't be using the lures. TB Edited by tcbetka 4/19/2008 5:47 PM

Posts: 1289 Location: WI | I trolled a Pacemaker last year..no hits, but it'll get more time this season. I expect my lack of a strike on time of the season more than lure type.

Posts: 412 Location: Waukesha, WI | I trolled a Super Topraider maybe twice. Both times it was 5AM when you could see the panfish surface feeding. No takers those times.

Posts: 2275 Location: SE, WI. | Troll surface baits every year and catch fish every year doing so. Just have to stick with it and gain confidence in it. Most of my hits are with the short line!!! You do not want two lures in close proximity. One 20ft. out , one 100 ft out. Other wise too much confusion and surface clutter with the sonics from each lure if close together. is there any certain time that a guy should troll a topwater than other times? and also, would it be more effective if i trolled double prop topwaters like super topraiders or will regular topraiders do the job or are there certain times when one works better than the other?

Posts: 2275 Location: SE, WI. | F8; For me, I do not like tallywacker style baits so much for trolling. If using the big motor, they don't always track well and at times it seems like you are going too fast. I like globes and topper stopper type designs OR like the other post said, A creeper and hog wobbler are compatable. Slower style moving baits are my first choice. I mostly use my bow mount for trolling. Topwater times are for me between 60 -75 degrees. I know many people boost about catching fish in colder temps, but I feel these are the best temps for topwater. Anytime water is clean of debris is a good time to troll these baits. If there is alot of floating weeds, forget the trolling and cast. Hope this helps. JIM Edited by jdsplasher 4/21/2008 7:23 AM

Posts: 2275 Location: SE, WI. | Kustom boy. Years ago I used to fish tail rotating lures like the tallywacker and topraiders BUT I had just toooooooo many fish miss from behind and got frustrated with tail baits, so I started making the headbanger. The sound is up front so I believe less fish will miss the bait from behind because many musky simply do not see the bait with all the refraction/reflection from the surface, so they hit the sound which means you get better hook ups. Guys that fish the headbanger tell me soooo much water is being thrown that fish really can't examine the lure so they smash it!!! Fgr8, Dark water should be Ideal for trolling surface baits. Spread baits apart like I mentioned, then get your trolling speed where you want it and doNOT keep ajusting speed. Clear water may be tougher, so maybe try a night time troll.
