Trying my hand at some cranks, just wondering about lip placement.
Rounded vs square
If I want a shallow dive what angle and size lip should be used?
Thanks

The reason that no one has responded to your post yet is because lip placement angles / round vs square are very basic questions which you would likely find pages of info about by doing some forum searches. I am also a starting crankbait builder so I understand how overwhelming it all can seem so I will start you on the right track(hopefully!)
GENERALLY speaking, the shallower the lip angle ( in reference to a line drawn horizontally through the bait) the deeper the bait will dive & will have a tighter side to side wobble or vibration. Likewise the steeper the angle, the shallower the bait will run & with a slightly wider wobble. As far as round vs square lip, GENERALLY speaking round lips dive deeper & produce a tighter wobble than square lips when angles are the same.

These are just basic guidelines because overall weight & size of the bait, wood density, # of hooks, shape of the body, size of lips in relation to the size of the bait, etc, etc, etc, can influence diving depth & action.

Hope this helps, good building!

When I started I made about 20 prototypes with various lips at many angles and placments. Made a lot of firewood but learned a LOT! I played mostly with metal lips though so I woudl have commented sooner if I knew anything. I do know there was a great thread here about 12-18 months ago with pictures and full descriptions. If you figure it out stop by and show me your stuff. I am sure you visit Waconia lake once in a while.
