For those of you with Opti's or Verados, do they typically start on the first crank and idle without further attention like the E-Tecs supposedly do? My current carbed Merc 75 requires me to bump the choke for a couple minutes or so until it warms enough to stay running on its own.

Thanks,
Bob

My 150 Verado (new last year) starts almost instantly. It literally turns over for 2-3 seconds, virtually every time. It's amazing... And it never quits when I shift into gear.

Now my Pro Kicker, on the other hand...

The Opti's and fourstokes I've run have always started instantly. However, I've used quite a few 2 stroke motors and yes, they've almost always required me to choke them.

Have never had an issue with my Opti. Hit the key and within seconds she is purring like a baby kitten. Easiest starting motor that I have ever had, even in cold weather. My brother has a 4 stroke Yammy, and when it is warm it starts nice. When it is cold however, that thing can be a beast to start.

I have a 75 horse opti. My experience is that it starts every time within seconds. One thing to consider is to make sure your motor is completely down when turning the key. It has something to do with the intake, but motor will not start as well when motor is trimmed even a slight amount. BG

The one thing I will give that opti is that it's the best starting motor I've ever seen from any mfg. It's like a car, turn the key and go.

My Yammie 2-stroke can be a bear to start at the bginning of the day. She'll always start, just take a minute or two

tuffy1's motor "fires" right up.

Bobski, my 2001 90HP carbed 4 stroke needed the carbs cleaned when it wouldn't idle for diddly. I was informed by the mechanic I should have been running quickkleen every other tank. I don't recall the specifics as it happened when I was trying to sell it and they flagged the motor for not idling well. They tried quickkleen first but ultimately had to clean the carbs. It would be worth asking about IMO.

I have heard great things about the top end mercs when it comes to cold starts. The mid range mercs with carbs can be kinda grumpy and are known not to be good starters. My buddy has a 125 merc and I would take a set of oars over that thing any day of the week.

Thanks for the info guys. Looking forward to the day my boat motor starts as easily as my truck does.

All the Injected outboards start and run great. I've run Opti's since 2002, and never once had a problem starting. Even in temps down to 5 degrees.

Carbed motors can be a pain to start when it's cold out. That's why they have chokes.
